Fodens Tutor in Armagh

The ninth annual 'Armagh Brass Band Summer School' commenced on August 10th 2009. The course was a wonderful opportunity to develop already strong relationships between Fodens Band, Armagh Old Boys and over 100 brass musicians from the Emerald Isle.

The week proved to be a magnificent success with the largest number of delegates in attendance over its nine year history. The increase in attendance may result in a larger venue having to be sought for next years course. Marked individual and collective musical progress was observed from tutors; Toby Hobson, Mark Landon, Richard Poole, David Morton, Anita Dale, Leslie Howie and Mark Bousie under the directorship of Fodens Associate Conductor Mike Fowles.

The week included sectionals, masterclasses, individual tuition and full band rehearsals lead by the tutors as well as a 'Delegates Concerts' where over 20 soloists and small ensembles performed to a capacity audience at the Armagh Old Boys Band Club accompanied by the Fodens tutors. The Fodens octet also performed a separate concert for delegates and friends. The course concluded with a daytime concert in the town centre where the delegates were joined by the 'Old Boys Brass Band' and the '3rd Carrick Band' for an open air concert  followed by a finale concert and awards ceremony in the Band Hall.

In February 2010 the full Fodens Band will perform their 10th annual concert in Armagh. To celebrate this milestone the weekend will include concerts in Armagh’s spectacular Cathedral, a dinner dance event at the Armagh City Hotel and a Sunday morning Church service.

For any conductor and every audience, Foden’s Band is a musical Magic Carpet. It continually takes the listener to places that few other ensembles rarely even approach Howard Snell
