Foden's Band have announced the launch of a major composers competition and workshop in partnership with the RNCM. Speaking about the competition Band Manager Mark Wilkinson commented 'As well as our Youth and Educational work with brass and percussion musicians we decided that we would also like to do something to encourage compositional talent and as well as launching our Composers Competition we will shortly announce a workshop in Jazz composition and improvisation led by Foden's composer in residence Andy Scott and John Barber. We are pleased to announce the launch of the composers competition that will be run in two sections, composers for each section will be asked to submit a concert work between 4 to 8 minutes in length around 1st section standard.

Section 1 with be for those composers aged 23 and under : This would be to target composers who are Postgraduate at music college and under. The judges for this section will be Pete Meechan, Philip Sparke and Michael Fowles. The judging panel will short list 5 works which will be performed by Foden's at an open composer masterclass held in partnership with the RNCM in the RNCM Opera Theatre at 19.15 on 15th June  led by the Judges (details of the workshop to be advertised in due course). After this workshop the winner will be announced. The winning composer will get his/her work published by Prima Arts, performed at a Foden's Youth Concert as well as on the Allan Withington Conductor School.

Section 2 will be an 'Open Section' for composers of any age with no workshop – the idea is that this category will attract those at the start of their professional careers, as well as others, and therefore a workshop isn’t needed. The judging panel will be Peter Meechan, Philip Sparke, Paul Hindmarsh and Michael Fowles. The winning composer will get his/her work published by Prima Arts, £500 cash (awarded by the Wilfred Heaton Trust), piece perform at a high profile concert by Foden's and recorded on a Foden's Patrons cd as well as being performed at the 2015 Festival of Brass at the RNCM.There will also be cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd place
