17th November 2006 Fodens Annual Christmas ConcertFoden's Richardson Band will be holding their annual Christmas Concert on Sunday 17th December at Winsford Civic Hall. The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets can be purchased direct from the Winsford Civic Hall on 01606 867555. Come and join the current English National Champions who will be providing a varied programme consisting of Christmas and popular concert items. in the 'Festival of Brass' at the Royal Northern College of Music,
Manchester on 27th January. 7th November 2006 Fodens at Lions Youth Brass WorkshopSimone Rebello and the star players of the Foden's Richardson Band help music making at Lions Youth Brass Workshop. Last Saturday, 4th November, the Lions Youth Brass undertook a workshop with members of the Foden's Richardson Band. This workshop was funded by The Sandbach Boys School as part of the Music and Arts Status they have just received. The day started at 9.30 with a short warm up session for the band and then shortly before 10.00 the Fodens players arrived to listen to the band to asses what work they needed to carry out with their particular section. The concert will be a fund raising event to help raise the £4000 needed for the band to represent the North West area at the forthcoming 'National Finals' to be held at the Royal Albert Hall London at the end of October. At the contest Fodens will be competing against 20 of the countries leading brass bands. The concert commences at 7.30pm and tickets can be purchased on the door priced £7 and £6 concessionary. Fodens are a registered charity and if anyone would like to make a donation towards the cost of attending the contest they can post a cheque payable to Fodens Richardson Band to Mark Wilkinson, 7 Narbonne Avenue, Eccles M30 9DL. 17th August 2006 Fodens Announce New SigningFoden's Richardson Band is pleased to announce the signing of Stuart Baglin on EEb Bass prior to the British Open. Stuart joins from Flowers and will team up with Fodens Solo EEb Bass player Les Neish. Speaking to 4barsrest Mark Wilkinson stated "Fodens are extremely pleased to announce this major signing. Stuart is regarded as one of the countries leading bass players and brings a wealth of experience to the band." This
years summer school was the best so far with 92 participants whose
attendance at all workshops, sectional practices, rehearsals and
events far surpassed any other year, with a large number of participants
with 100 % attendance!
A very ambitious programme of music was enthusiastically taken on including; Marching On (Bosanko) Dimensions (Graham) Battle Hymn (Broadbent) Stage Centre (Richards). A new commission especially for the summer school 'Songs of Armagh' by Pete Meechan was also in the repertoire.
KEY EVENTS
1. Hay
Walks
This event took place on the Mall with young folk from Longstone
Riding for the Disabled and two of their horses 'Bob' and 'Robbie'
providing free rides for all. The Fodens Octet provided lively
music whilst people walked several laps of the Mall and dropped
their donations into buckets to buy hay for Bob, Robbie and the
other horses for the winter.
2. Monday
7th Evening, Tuesday 8th & Wednesday 9th Morning, Noon and
Night
Workshops, master classes, youth band rehearsals and all comers
rehearsals intermingled with football, cricket, rounders and singing
games laced with good humour, craic and good natured banter!
3. Thursday
10th 8pm Young Soloists, Duets, Junior Band and Intermediate Band
Concert, all backed by Fodens Octet
'What a treat' a full house (with extra chairs) was richly entertained
and encouraged by all the performers. 22 items were performed,
with the junior band performing 'Rock Around the Clock' and 'Armagh
Band Blues', conducted by Helen Tyler. The intermediate band successfully
performed 'Eye of the Tiger' Conducted by Toby Hobson. Everyone
was treated to a wonderful buffet supper which as usual included
a large slice of: - Fodens Cake!!
4. Friday
11th Morning
The last All Comers rehearsal to finalise the programme for Saturday
Nights Finale Concert - amazingly our most challenging pieces
were all included.
Friday Afternoon
Secret preparations took place for the street musician's competition.
Groups of up to 8 musicians prepared a 8-10 minute programme to
be performed at each of the 8 stations placed around the pedestrian
areas of Armagh.
Friday Night
Barbeque for all at the Old Boys' Music Centre - a little time
to relax, chat and get to know each other better.
5. Saturday
12th 11am - 2pm
The Street Musicians Competition judged by the Fodens Octet. Eight
very competitive groups of around 8 players provided an 8 minute
programme at each station around Armagh, a total of 554 minutes
of musical delight! Adjudicated by the Fodens tutors marks were
based on musical ability, percussion, singing, dress, innovation
and entertainment value. The group named the 'American Rebels'
(Alias the Wilson Family) were the overall winners with 502 points,
just 4 points ahead of the 'Bellisimo Belters' on 498 points.
Many shopping folk stopped groups to thank them for their lively performances and for lifting their day.
Saturday
6.30pm
The Finale Concert took place on the Mall in very cold and damp
conditions with quite a good crowd turning up to clap and cheer
us on.
The 'American Rebels' treated us all to some items from their winning performances in the Street Musicians Competition - Their singing and playing in their arrangement of 'I Feel Pretty' especially caught the eye!
