Sarah Lenton

Solo Baritone

Sarah is regarded as one of the best exponents of the baritone in the country today.

Sarah started playing at the age of 7 as a member of Fulbourn & Teversham Royal British Legion Band, based near the city of Cambridge.  Sarah auditioned and was successful in becoming a member of both the Children’s and National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, attending a total of 12 courses and gaining the principal baritone seat in both bands.  Sarah also spent a happy 4 years as principal euphonium of Youth Brass 2000, during this time Sarah won best euphonium at Tameside Festival twice and also best soloist at the National Youth Championships.

When Sarah was 13 she joined the GUS Band on the baritone bench, becoming one the youngest members the band had ever had.  Sarah says that being given the opportunity to play at this level from an early age gave her the chance to gain invaluable experience.

Sarah moved northwards to study for her music degree at the Royal Northern College of Music.  In her first term at college she auditioned and was appointed principal baritone of the Fairey Band and was regularly featured as a soloist at concerts and recorded a solo on their 75th anniversary CD.
In April 2014 Sarah travelled to Scotland to compete in the European Solo Competition.  The competition took place over a week with knock out rounds each day.  Sarah was successful in getting all the way through to the semi-final stages and was awarded the best baritone award.

The chance arose for Sarah to audition to play in the Fodens Band, an ensemble that she had wanted to be a part of since first starting being involved in brass bands. Sarah also enjoys being part of the Fodens tutor group and regularly works with the band’s youth ensembles, promoting banding to the next generation is something that Sarah is passionate about and enjoys.

In 2015 Sarah will graduate from the Royal Northern College of Music with a 1st class honours degree. Sarah was also nominated by the college to receive the Harry Mortimer Prize which was presented to her at the British Open Brass Band Championships.

Sarah is a Sterling Musical Instrument artist and plays exclusively on the Sterling Virtuosi Baritone.

Sarah has now made the decision that the ‘North’ is now her home and is looking forward to the years ahead with the band.

For any conductor and every audience, Foden’s Band is a musical Magic Carpet. It continually takes the listener to places that few other ensembles rarely even approach Howard Snell
