Coaching Day with Lions Youth

Lions Youth Brass and their Musical Director Nigel Birch turned to their Fodens connections this weekend as they began to step up their preparation for the forthcoming National Youth Championships.

Friday night saw Andy Scott visit the band with the bands Musical Associate Mike Fowles as they worked on a brand new arrangement which will be heard in April at the R.N.C.M. The band really enjoyed working with Andy and it was great to hear him talk about his thoughts on the piece.

Sunday saw seven of the Fodens players tutor the band on the set work, Oceans by Goff Richards. Mark Wilkinson, Helen Williams, Chris Haigh, Glyn Williams, Shaun Farrington, Stuart Baglin and Mark Landon, put the young players through their paces on this very enjoyable test-piece.

Following a break for lunch the band welcomed Mike Fowles once again as he directed a very hard working and productive rehearsal.

Speaking on behalf of the band Nigel Birch commented," it is a great opportunity for the band to receive tuition by some fantastic musicians from one of the world’s finest brass bands. What is achieved in these sessions is impossible to achieve during the course of normal rehearsals and helps me and my players enormously. We look forward to continuing our very strong partnership with Fodens in the future”.

For any conductor and every audience, Foden’s Band is a musical Magic Carpet. It continually takes the listener to places that few other ensembles rarely even approach Howard Snell
