Foden’s workshop with Bolton and Astley Youth Bands

On Sunday 12th February a workshop day took place at Bolton Music Centre with 4 tutors from Foden’s Band. The day was organised in preparation for the National Youth Brass Band Championships on Sunday 22nd April, with tutors Mark Wilkinson (cornet) Chris Haigh (tenor horn), Mark Bousie (euphonium/baritone) and Chris Bastock (percussion). They were joined by Bolton Music Service staff – former Foden’s member Toby Hobson (tuba) and Helen Minshall, Bolton’s Head of Brass, who tutored the trombones.

The day began with sectionals for Bolton Youth Brass Band, working on the Goff Richards test piece “Oceans”, which is the set piece for the Youth Band Championship Section. The piece is challenging but enjoyable for the youngsters, and the tutors worked hard to bring out the best in them. Later, Mark Bousie led a full rehearsal during which great progess was made. The band are looking forward to the contest very much, and the workshop was really beneficial to the preparations.

In the afternoon, Astley Youth Band took to the stand, and the tutors once again worked in sectionals. Astley are preparing to take part in the Intermediate Section of the contest, playing the Goff Richards test piece “Saddleworth Festival Overture”. With players as young as 8 years old, and an ability range of Grade 2 upwards, this piece is a huge challenge for the band, who won “Band with the most potential” at last year’s contest. Again, the tutors worked really hard to help the youngsters achieve their very best.
