Andy Scott

Composer in Residence

Andy is a composer and saxophonist who initiates projects, leads groups and collaborates with many talented artists. Known for his musical stylistic versatility (which ranges from contemporary to free improvisation, taking in classical, folk, jazz, latin & funk influences), Andy has during the last thirty years (and continues to) developed a personal sound and musical language, which sees him regularly performing and having his music performed worldwide.

Winner of a British Composer Award in 2006 for his work ‘Dark Rain’, and shortlisted (final three) for a BCA in 2012 & 2015 for two works that he wrote for Foden’s Band, ‘Spirit of Mingus’ (with guest Rex Richardson) & ‘A Child Like You’ (with guests Anna-Clare Monk, Lauren Scott & four members of Foden’s Youth Band), Andy writes to commission for many internationally-respected soloists and ensembles.

Andy’s association with Foden’s Band started as a result of Les Neish commissioning him to write a Tuba Concerto, ‘Salt of the Earth’, which was premiered by Les & Foden’s Brass Band (conducted by Michael Fowles) at the RNCM Festival of Brass in January 2008. Andy was delighted to be approached to be the inaugural Composer-in-Residence with the famous Foden’s Brass Band, and was appointed in March 2008.

Andy has since penned a number of works that Foden’s Band has performed and recorded, many winning awards such as ‘Salt of the Earth’, ‘Lure of the Red Jacket’ & ‘A World Within - the music of Andy Scott’ (British Bandsman CD of the Year).

Working closely with Mike Fowles, and benefitting from the guidance of Bram Tovey & Allan Withington, Andy & Foden’s Band continue to explore and develop artistic ideas and collaborations.

Andy & his wife Lauren (a professional harpist) moved to Sandbach in August 2007 and contribute to the town by instigating and directing the Sandbach Concert Series (formed in 2010) & the Sandbach Young Musician of the Year Competition (formed in 2015).
