Solo Contest Percussion Class

Posted by Mark Wilkinson on 26 September 2013

Foden’s Band are keen to encourage more percussion players to take part in their forthcoming solo competition on the 2nd of November.  We have several entries so far, but would be delighted to see more, especially since our very own principal percussionist Mark Landon is to adjudicate these sections.

While the closing date for other sections has been extended to the 5th of October at the request of music teachers, we are allowing percussion entries to come in up til the week before, the 26th of October.

We are expecting soloists and ensembles from bands and schools and, as it is a first in terms of offering percussion sections at a competition, there has been no precedent set previously.  This means that we’ll hear a wide variety of music and styles, be it modern and upbeat, or the more familiar pieces.

Instruments are being provided, as are sticks, though anyone choosing to play instruments such as steel drums will have to provide their own as they are not a common staple in the bandroom!

To avoid any confusion, Mark has asked us to point out that Timpani are included in the untuned section.

Drum kit players can use backing accompaniment, and should let us know on their application form so that we can make a cd player/ipod docking station available.

This is the ideal opportunity for percussion players to showcase their talents and receive constructive comments from one of the finest percussionists in the brass band world.

For any conductor and every audience, Foden’s Band is a musical Magic Carpet. It continually takes the listener to places that few other ensembles rarely even approach Howard Snell
