Armagh Old Boys Brass Band Summer School 2026

On Sunday 22 ^nd March Foden's travelled to Market Drayton to perform to a sold out 'Festival Drayton Centre' programming a reprise of their 'Exodus: Moses in Egypt' set as well as music from the pens of Pallhuber, Graham, Downie, Lome Barry, Elgar and Mangione!

During the concert a presentation was made to long standing percussionist Mark Landon who has decided to step away from full time banding. Mark has been a fantastic asset and servant to Foden's for the past 26 years and despite stepping away, will join their pool of percussionists providing cover when needed!

Foden's at the Crucible!

In late January Foden's returned to the recording studio to record music for a production of 'The Ladies Football Club' which is being shown at the Crucible, Sheffield between the 28th February and 28th March.

This high profile production was written by Stefano Massini (The Lehman Trilogy) and adapted by Tim Firth (Calendar Girls) which shows that the final result is not always the one on the scoreboard at full time!

Foden's contribution was to record excerpts from a well known championship section test piece used during the performance (visit the show to find out!!)

TLPC was formed in 2022 by its founder, Tony Lucas who spent over 20 years at JAM Percussion, concentrating on products that are easy to obtain in the UK.

Foden's crowned the North West Area Champions for the 10th consecutive year!

On Sunday 1st March Foden's competed at the 'North West Area' contest held at the Winter Gardens Blackpool.

Foden's competed against 11 other bands performing the set test piece 'Elgar Variations' by Martin Ellerby, being subsequently announced as the Champions for the tenth consecutive year also winning the prize for the best Principal Cornet

Howard Snell becomes an 'Honorary Vice President'

All at Foden's are delighted that Howard Snell has accepted their offer to become an 'Honorary Vice President' of the band.

Howard needs no introduction to the world of brass bands — or indeed to the wider musical community. His distinguished career as a conductor, performer and educator has left an indelible mark on the brass band movement, both nationally and internationally.

He is, of course, a very special figure in the history of Foden’s Band. His leadership and musical influence during his time with the Band contributed significantly to their artistic development and success, and his continued association with Foden’s is something held in the highest regard.

Foden's opening concert of the 2026 'RNCM International Brass Band Festival' is now available to watch via wobplay.com

Conducted by Michael Fowles, their programme opened with 'A Fanfare of Bells' by Herman Pallhuber, followed by Claire Cope's world premiere of 'The Green Chapel' before joining forces with the fantastic Bones Apart Trombone Quartet. To end the first half they gave the English premier of 'Tranquil Abiding' from the pen of President Paul Mealor.

The Second half included Britten's 'Prelude and Courtley Dances' from 'Gloriana' arranged by Paul Hindmarsh, Philip Littlemore's re-scored version of Edmund Rubbra's 'Variations on the Shining River' before closing with Philip Sparke's 'Partita.'

The concert was also recorded by BBC Radio 3, broadcast dates will be advertised when known.

Foden's say Goodbye and Hello!

The 'RNCM International Brass Band Festival' saw a presentation to long serving member Andy Rolfe who leaves Foden's after 19 years service. During this time Andy has been an active part of the band's management team and takes up a role as Trustee.

Due to Andy leaving on 3rd cornet there has been some movement on the back row with the experienced Adrian Lacey joining on 2nd cornet. Adrian was a long serving member of the Staffordshire Building Society Band where he played Principal Cornet for 10 years followed by a spell at Grimethorpe on Solo Cornet.

Following the departure of 'bumper up' Paul McDonald in December, the RNCM concert also saw Jon Probert move up to this position from solo cornet with Darcie Dewhurst joining on the front row. Darcie joins from Blackburn and Darwen where she was Principal Cornet as well as being solo cornet with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain , Principal Cornet with Lancashire Youth Band and studying at the RNCM under the guidance of Roger Webster.

Speaking about the changes Mark Wilkinson commented 'We would like to thank Andy for his impeccable service and commitment during the past 19 years and wish him well in his retirement from full time banding and work. We are delighted to announce the signing of Adrian who also brings further experience to the section. I have been an admirer of Darcie's playing for a number of years and thrilled she has accepted our invitation to join.'

On Friday 23rd January Foden's once again opened the prestigious '2026 International Brass Band Festival' at the Royal Northern College of Music.

The RNCM International Brass Band Festival remains a premier stage for the world’s leading brass band musicians, celebrating the finest repertoire crafted for the genre. Under the artistic direction of Dr David Thornton, the festival once again embraced both innovative new compositions and celebrated legacy works, a commitment that resonated throughout this year’s programme.

A highlight of the 2026 festival was the celebration of Philip Sparke's 75th birthday, an award-winning English composer who has made a profound impact on the wind and brass repertoire.

The Festival also welcomed the Concord Brass Band from Denmark, as well as Foden's , Black Dyke, Tredegar, Brighouse and Rastrick, Cory, RNCM Band, RNCM Junior School Band and Yorkshire Youth Band

Foden’s Band has entered into a new partnership with Adams Percussion, world’s leading manufacturer of professional percussion instruments.

As part of the partnership, Foden’s Band will perform on a full Adams percussion setup, supporting the band’s continued focus on musical quality, consistency and reliability at the highest level. Adams Percussion instruments are widely used by professional orchestras, ensembles and soloists worldwide.

The partnership brings together two organisations with long-standing reputations in their respective fields. Foden’s Band is one of the most successful and historically significant brass bands in the world, while Adams Percussion has built a strong international reputation for its timpani, keyboard percussion and concert percussion instruments.

Preparations are well underway for Foden's Band appearance at this years Brass Band Festival at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, with their opening performance of the festival taking place on Friday 23rd January at 7:30pm!

Heartwarming melodies infused with lyrical lines and bright fanfares in Thomas Doss 'A Fanfare of Bells' mark the opening of this concert, setting the stage for an RNCM International Brass Brand Festival commission and world premiere, Claire Cope’s 'The Green Chapel', featuring Bones Apart Trombone Quartet. Next, a piece by the Band’s Artistic Director, Paul Mealor, offers a meditative journey shaped by his walks in the natural landscapes of North Wales. Each movement draws on a line from James Agee’s poem Sure on this Shining Night, bringing the first half of the concert to a contemplative close.

Paul Hindmarsh’s brass band arrangement of Britten’s 'Prelude and Courtly Dances from Gloriana' opens the second half and paves the way for a newly re-scored version of Edmund Rubbra’s 'Variations on the Shining River', inspired by a nighttime walk along the River Ness in Scotland. Concluding the evening, Foden's will perform Philip Sparke’s 'Partita' – written in 1989 as a commission for Norway’s renowned Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklag.

Foden's announce the signing of Mike Eccles

Foden's are delighted to announce the signing of Mike Eccles on Flugel Horn following the departure of Melanie Whyle.

Mike is no stranger to Foden's having originally joined in 1998 on 3rd cornet, holding various positions within the section culminating in the band’s Nationals victory in 1999. Following his departure from Foden's, Mike held positions with YBS and Hepworth Bands, before joining Fairey’s in 2004. Whilst at Fairey's, he moved onto flugel and became the musical director of the Acid Brass project. After 11 years at Fairey’s, he joined Brighouse and Rastrick where he spent the next 10 years leaving after their British Open victory in September.

Musical Director Michael Fowles commented: “Mike is a fine musician and a high quality, established soloist who I’m looking forward to working with very much, he will be a great addition to Foden's.”

Long serving members Paul McDonald and Melanie Whyle leave Foden's

Foden's final concert of the year saw the departure of Solo Cornet player Paul McDonald and Flugel Melanie Whyle who are both leaving the band due to a combination of work and family reasons.

Paul originally joined Foden's in 2002, and since 2013 has been the band’s 'bumper up' with Mel originally joining on repiano in 2011 before switching to Flugel Horn. Despite the pair leaving the Band, Paul will continue to provide Web / IT support with Mel deputising for the band when needed as well as continuing as the Foden's Youth Band’s administrator.

Conductor Michael Fowles thanked both members for their long and dedicated service as well as presenting them with a framed photo!

2025 Annual Christmas Concert & Awards

On Sunday 14th December Foden's brought 2025 to a close with their annual Christmas Concert in Sandbach being joined by their amazing community band; before, during the interval and also for a massed encore of Jingle Bells!

On Saturday 6th December Foden's held their first Christmas concert of the year to an appreciative audience in Crewe!

On Sunday 7th they returned to Sandbach to perform alongside the fantastic Matt Ford for their annual 'Memories of Christmas' show to a full house! The concert also featured the 'Fodenettes!' (Terri, Grace and Ashley). This concert was directed by John Barber who arranged all the show content

Foden's celebrate the 50th Birthday of Band President Paul Mealor

On Saturday 29 ^th November Foden's travelled to St Asaph, Wales upon the invitation of President Paul Mealor to perform a concert to celebrate his 50th birthday. The concert featured music, requested by Paul as well as including the band's

recent 'Brass in Concert' entertainment set 'EXODUS - Moses in Egypt.' To commemorate the passing of Elgar Howarth earlier this year the band programme two movements from Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exihibution' (who scored the entire work for Brass Band)

The highlight of the concert was a World Premiere of a major new composition from Paul entitled 'Tranquil Abiding' as well as the first performance of 'The Callender March' in over 100 years!

The concert was recorded by BBC radio to be broadcast across BBC Radio Wales and Radio 3 in the coming months (stay tuned for more information!)

Foden's announce the appointment of Ollie Jackson on Percussion

Foden's are delighted to announce the signing of Ollie Jackson who joins the bands percussion team from Carlton Main

Originally from Sheffield, Oliver is a drummer and percussionist currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutorage of Simone Rebello. His musical journey began at the age of nine, learning drums and piano before joining the Oughtibridge band aged 16. After two years, he progressed to Carlton Main and has also had opportunities to perform and compete across several European countries with Youth Brass 2000.

Alongside brass bands, Oliver performs with a wide range of ensembles such as orchestras, wind orchestras, musical theatre groups and function bands, helping him build strong experience across all percussion disciplines, including orchestral percussion, timpani, tuned percussion and drum kit.

Ollie commented 'I’m so grateful for my time at Carlton Main and to have been a part of a great band, I now look forward to joining Foden’s and beginning the next chapter in my journey’

Intensive sectionals are a success!

Following the announcement of the 2026 Area test Pieces in September, Foden's launched a new initiative giving competitors the opportunity of working with the bands Principal players and Conductor on these challenging works.

Over the past couple of weeks Michael Fowles, Mark Wilkinson, Gary Curtin, John Barber, Jonathan Bates and Andy Cattanach have held sectionals / sessions on the 4 ^th - 1 ^st area pieces which has seen nearly 100 members travel to Sandbach. As well as working on these test pieces, the sessions also covered various aspects of brass playing and score preparation.

Speaking about the initiative Mark Wilkinson commented 'The overall feedback has been fantastic and we are delighted that we have been able to give competitors a heads up well in advance of the contests. We have been delighted with the response with players travelling from as far as Weymouth, London and Yorkshire for the sessions. Due to the project success we will be shortly advertising further dates in mid to late January'

Ahead of their appearance at the National Finals, Foden's look forward to returning to the Regent Hall on 10 ^th October under the baton of Russell Gray and Michael Fowles.

Fresh from their recent recording with Mike Lovatt, Foden's will reunite with Mike to perform tracks from his latest cd (to be released in 2026) as well as from his critically acclaimed '56 Degrees North' cd with Foden's. Foden's arrive on time!

On Saturday 27 ^th September an ensemble from Foden's helped celebrate 200 years of the modern railway at Sandbach Train Station. 'Railway 200' is part of a year nationwide partnership-led campaign to celebrate and inspire a new generation of young pioneering talent to choose a career in rail. The celebration involved a large number of planned events across the Country to celebrate rail’s remarkable past, its role today, and its importance to a sustainable future.

The first train to run through Sandbach Station was on May 4th 1842 from Manchester to Sandbach with the station being used primarily for goods and industrial freight and in 1863 the LNER (London North East Railway) was granted by Parliament to install a train line connecting Crewe to Northwich via Sandbach. This was opened on July 1st 1868, which was the first passenger service between Sandbach and Northwich.

In 2017 Sandbach Town Council were responsible for installing new town and village signs at several key locations in Sandbach making reference to Foden's Band. One of these signs sits proudly at Sandbach Train Station being erected courtesy of the 'Friends of Sandbach Train Station'. Friends of Sandbach Station are a group of volunteers aiming to make the station a more welcoming and passenger-friendly place

Foden's Youth Band look forward to their 2025 / 26 season

Foden's Youth Band look forward to commencing their 2025 / 26 season on the 5th October ahead of a busy and exciting year!

Now in its 14th year the Youth Band offers an incredible opportunity for brass and percussion players (aged 21 and under, Grade 5+) to develop their skills and make music at the highest level. Based in Sandbach, the band meets once a month throughout the academic year, working with the Foden's team of conductors and tutors. Members benefit from expert guidance, challenging and engaging repertoire, and exciting performance opportunities.

Foden's Youth are also pleased to renew their partnership with the RNCM which will see RNCM students working with Foden's Youth Band members in sectionals / full rehearsals as well as being mentored by Foden's Band Principal players

Mel Whyle - Foden's Youth Co ordinator commented 'We cant wait to return in October with a exciting rehearsal and concert schedule which will see the band performing alongside Foden's and the Oslofjord Brass Band from Norway as well as the 'Love Music Trust' Summer Celebrations. Foden's return to the recording studio

On the 20/21 September Foden's returned to the recording studio to work alongside the fabulous Mike Lovatt for a disc to be released early next year! As well as recording with Mike, Foden's also had the added bonus of accompanying the legendary Gordon Campbell in a featured duet!

The CD was directed by both Michael Fowles and Paul Fisher as well as recording with Matt Skelton (kit), Jeremy Brown (Double Bass), Liam Dunachie (Piano) and Geraldine O'Doherty (Harp)

Material was arranged by Colin Skinner who was also featured on Sax with the recording undertaken by World of Brass

Foden's return to Birmingham Citadel after 80 years!

On Sunday 14th September Foden's returned to Birmingham to share the stage with the fantastic Birmingham Citadel Band to a capacity audience.

Each band performed an entertaining and well received set before combining for a number of massed items including Star Lake, In Perfect Piece and Kingdom Triumphant shared by Foden's guest conductor Ian Porthouse and Gavin Lamplough Bandmaster of the Citadel Band.

During the concert Gavin Lamplough presented Foden's with a framed letter dated 27 ^th April 1945 from Fred Mortimer confirming a booking for a £65 fee as well as £15 train ticket for Foden's to perform two concerts with the Citadel Band!!!!

Foden's hope its not another 80 years until they perform together again!

2026 REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - INTENSIVE SECTIONALS

Following the weekend's announcement of the set-works for the 2026 Regional Brass Band Championships, we are delighted to announce a brand new initiative ahead of next year's contests!

During November this year, our Musical Director Mike Fowles and a team of our principal players will be holding open sectional sessions focussing on each of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th section regional works, where delegates can bring their parts & scores for their respective pieces and work alongside our top team of tutors to kick-start their preparations!

The cost of the sessions will be £30 per player, and during the sessions you will have the chance to talk to our tutors about any specific issues within the pieces, or any general brass playing questions on the side!

Foden's and Porthouse return to Birmingham on 14th September

Following last weekend's successful British Open appearance, Foden's are looking forward to returning to Birmingham on Sunday 14 ^th September to share the stage with the Birmingham Citadel Band.

Foden's, under the baton of guest conductor Ian Porthouse with commence the concert featuring a number of the band's fantastic soloists before handing over to Birmingham Citadel who will perform in the second half under the baton of Bandmaster Gavin R. Lamplough. Both bands will then perform Star Lake, In Perfect Piece and Kingdom Triumphant as massed items

British Open 2025 Championships

On Saturday 6 ^th September Foden's travelled to Birmingham to compete at the British Open Championships held at the Symphony Hall. The 'British Open' is regarded as one of the World's leading Brass Band events due to the quality of the competing bands.

Each band performed 'Star Crossed Lovers' by Stephen Roberts, commissioned by the British Open and inspired by the classic love story 'Romeo and Juliet.'

Foden's gave a fantastic account of the set work and received excellent remarks from the three adjudicators, eventually being placed 4th.

Now entering its 14th year, the Youth Band continues to offer exciting opportunities for young brass and percussion players aged 21 and under (Grade 5+), bringing together talented musicians from across the region—and beyond—for high-quality music-making, expert tuition, and outstanding performance experiences.

The band meets monthly in Sandbach across the academic year, working with Foden’s team of professional conductors, tutors, and guest artists.

The focus is on developing young players through challenging repertoire, exposure to top-level musicianship, and opportunities that complement and extend the experiences offered by school, youth, and local banding programmes.

Ashley Dixon raises awareness about stem cell donations

“Donating my stem cells was such a small thing for me, but a massive thing for the person on the other side. One day out of your life could give someone countless years.”

Ashley plays Solo Baritone with Foden's and recently gave the ultimate gift to a stranger: a second chance at life!

“I first signed up to the stem cell register after someone I knew through the brass band I play in was diagnosed with leukemia and needed a stem cell transplant. A big campaign across the Brass Band Scene happened with many of us signing up with the DKMS team - it was very easy to register,” recalls Ashley.

“7 years went by - to be honest, I had completely forgotten I had signed up! Then, I remember I had been at work and I checked my phone - I had a missed call, text, and email from DKMS - I thought: What’s all this?”

“To hear I was a potential match for a patient - it was amazing. I was a little nervous about the donation experience, but everyone was so lovely and reassuring.

“I donated at the Sheffield collection centre - everyone there was so kind. In fact, it was quite nice to have a rest for a few hours! Life is so busy - so it was nice to have time just to myself.

“Everyone I’ve told thinks it's amazing. I know I’ve even inspired other people to sign up! I work at a secondary school, and they were really supportive. In fact, a little boy at my school has recently been diagnosed with leukaemia, so it feels even more important.

“I’ve now written to the patient who received my stem cells, and I found out he’s a dad - knowing I’ve given him extra time with his two children is incredible. I was excited to hear he’s doing well, and I hope one day we might even be able to meet.”

Foden’s tutors return to Armagh for the 21st ‘Armagh Old Boys Brass Band Summer School’

Armagh Old Boys Silver Band where delighted to see the return of their ‘Brass Band Summer School’ between the 11th and 16th of August 2025 held in the City of Armagh High School with funding made available from the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavin Council.

The summer school provides an opportunity for young and young at heart to come together to form two bands based on players ability: The Sterling Band conducted by Mark Bousie and The Sovereign Band conducted by Michael Fowles. Attendees ranged from the age of six to seventy- four and represented many bands across the province, Ireland and Mainland UK. Participants were also treated to an outstanding performance by the Foden’s tutors.

Throughout the week delegates developed their music technicality through an exciting and challenging repertoire which included; Prismatic Light by Alan Fernie, Trailblaze by Geoff Richards, The Seal Lullaby by Eric Whitacre (arr Alan Fernie) Neverland by Christopher Bond, A musical tribute to Roald Dahl – The World’s Greatest Storyteller arranged by Philip Harper, and Shakira’s Waka-Waka arranged by Jonathan Bates.

The Summer School Spectacular Concert held in Armagh Old Boys Band music centre on the Saturday afternoon was a culmination of a great week of hard work and fun performed to a captivated audience.

Foden's to hold an 'Open' rehearsal ahead of the British Open Championships

Join Foden's Band and Musical Director Russell Gray on Thursday 4th September for an open rehearsal ahead of the 2025 British Open Brass Band Championships in Birmingham's Symphony Hall!

The band will be putting their final touches to Stephen Roberts' set-work 'Star Crossed Lovers', inspired by Prokofiev's music to 'Romeo and Juliet' before heading down to the Midlands the following day.

It all starts with the 48th Brass in Concert Championship, hosted by the evergreen Frank Renton. Foden's recently welcomed Ann Nevitt (former Mayor of Sandbach) and her husband Philip to a rehearsal where the band were presented with a 'substantial' cheque!

Between 2024 / 2025 Ann chose Foden's as her 'Mayors Charity' and arranged a large number of fund-raising events including a quiz night, grand draw and concerts in the Area.

Speaking on behalf of Foden's Mark Wilkinson commented 'We would like to thank Ann and her team as well the local Community for their support. Ann has spent a tremendous amount of time raising funds which helped contribute towards our costs in representing England at the European Brass Band Championships in Norway earlier this year. Everyone at Foden's is very grateful to Ann and Sandbach Town Council for their continued support and we look forward to working with Ann on a number of future events.'

Foden's are delighted that Mike Lovatt will appear as their guest soloist at the Regent Hall on the eve of the National Finals.

Mike is regarded as one of the World's leading Trumpet players who's recording career includes the James Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day, Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (with The London Symphony Orchestra) the award winning Chicago, Kevin Spacey’s Beyond the Sea, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Madagascar, and The Corpse Bride.

In 2018 Mike recorded his first solo album with Foden's and will return to the recording studio with Foden's once again in September.

New music commissioning project for 2026 in partnership with BBC Radio 3

Five UK bands are collaborating on an innovative project which will commission serious new music from established composers in other genres who have not yet composed for brass band. The initiative is being spearheaded by The cooperation Band, Cory, Flowers, Tredegar and Foden's alongside conductor Martyn Brabbins. The aim is to identify suitable composers, invite them to compose for the genre, and then commit to five 'premiere' performances across the UK, one from each band.

Richard Blackford is the first commissioned composer, with the piece being supported and co-commissioned by BBC Radio 3. Blackford ranks among Europe’s leading composers for both concert and media music. His works are performed internationally and his scores for film and television are broadcast widely across nearly every European nation. His acclaimed choral composition Pietà earned the Ivor Novello Composer Award in 2020 and continues to be performed around the world.

His new piece for brass band is called Orbital, which is based on Samantha Harvey's 2024 Booker Prize winning novel. The novel, which draws upon the work and research of Carl Sagan, follows six astronauts aboard the International Space Station as they orbit Earth, reflecting on subjects including the existence or nature of God, the meaning of life, and existential threats such as climate change.

Schedules for the first performances of this new work are being drawn up by each band and will take place throughout 2026. It is intended that this piece is the first in a sequence of new music from established composers, and discussions with future collaborators are already underway.

A spokesperson for the five band initiative commented: "We're delighted to be working on this project together. At several moments across brass band repertoire history, new voices have emerged which injected energy, innovation and new ways of thinking into our music. Composers such as Gilbert Vinter, John McCabe and Philip Wilby were all well-established before they wrote for brass band later on in their careers, with such huge and long-lasting impact.

“This initiative similarly aims to discover new creative voices from outside of the movement. We are aware that there is already a huge quantity of new music for brass band, but not such an abundance of quality. One of the central objectives of this project is to create music which other bands will listen to and want to programme themselves and we are keen to work with each of the composers to introduce them to our musical world and advise them on what makes our most well-loved repertoire so frequently performed. We are extremely grateful to BBC Radio 3 for their belief in this project and assistance in funding this co-commission. Following the success of the series ‘Brass Banding with Hannah Peel’, it is fantastic to see a continued interest in supporting and programming music from brass bands in their broadcasting.”

The composer of Orbital, Richard Blackford commented: "I’m thrilled to have been chosen to collaborate closely with five of the greatest brass bands in the world on Orbital. The piece is virtuosic, full of drama and contrasts and, I hope - good tunes.”

Armagh 2025 Summer School in partnership with Foden's

Since 2000, Foden's have travelled to Armagh, Northern Ireland each February to hold an annual concert and masterclass as guests of the Armagh OId Boys' Band. In the same year, the Armagh Summer School was launched and continues to be held annually open to brass and percussion players of all ages and abilities.

All of these events were, and continue to be, the brainchild of Ivor Stevenson from the Armagh Old Boys Brass Band. Ivor continues to be a major driving force for the encouragement of brass playing in Northern Ireland. In honour of these achievements, he was awarded an MBE for his services to banding in Northern Ireland as well as becoming a Vice President of Foden's.

The annual summer course gives brass enthusiasts the opportunity to study, learn, perform and socialise with tutors from Foden’s Band. Set in the historic city of Armagh, Northern Ireland, the course base is the City of Armagh High School between the 11 ^th and 16 ^th August.

This year, delegates on the non residential course will spend a week of rehearsals and sectionals with Musical Director Mike Fowles, and tutors Mark Wilkinson & Richard Poole (Cornets), Jonathan Bates (Flugel & Horns), Gary Curtin & Mark Bousie (Euphoniums & Baritones), Shaun Farrington (Trombones), Stewart Baglin (Basses) and Anthony Mann (Percussion) - all for just £60!

On Friday 20 ^th June, Foden's Band returned to the fantastic Victoria Hall, Hanley for a night of Community Music, sharing the stage with their fantastic Youth Band and Community Choirs - Alsager Community Choir, Dougie Mac Choir, Endon Community Choir, Fulford Community Choir & Ovation!

Foden's Youth performed a number of 'extended' works under Musical Directors Mark Bousie & Mike Fowles with some truly outstanding solo playing in the first half, before the audience were treated to the Choir contributions under the direction of Dan Hollingshurst

In the second half, Foden's revisited ‘CASSIUS: The Rumble in the Jungle’ set before bringing over 200 musicians together for a massed performance of ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music!'

Stateside connection for Foden's

On Thursday 12th June, Foden's were delighted to host Milwaukee Festival Brass from America who travelled to the UK to compete at the Saddleworth Whit Friday Marches.

The band, under the direction of Dr Mark A Taylor, rehearsed in Foden's bandroom with Foden's MD Michael Fowles on their contest March, as well as concert items for their performance with Linthwaite Band whilst in England.

Founded in 1985, Milwaukee Festival Brass are made up of volunteer brass and percussion players from all over Southeastern Wisconsin using traditional British Brass Band instruments.

From the first Whit Friday Marches in 1884, the event has grown in popularity.

On Friday 13th June over 100 brass bands participated in twenty different contests at venues scattered around the areas of Tameside and Saddleworth.

At each venue, bands march to a central location where they perform a contest march which is judged by an adjudicator. Foden's played the popular march 'The President' conducted by Michael Fowles. After this the band members get back on their coach, travel to the next village where they repeat the same procedure again! The contests are open to all-comers, so the local youth bands get to match their skills against the UK's top bands. For the players, the dash from contest to contest makes for an exhilarating (though exhausting) evening. Thousands of spectators travel to Saddleworth and Tameside to watch was it commonly called 'the greatest free show in the world'.

Each contest offers prizes for the best band, best youth band, best soloists with each venue attracting between 50 - 70 bands. Each contest is organised by local volunteers with the running costs and prize money being raised by local donations, sponsorship and fund-raising events.

At the end of the night (each contest has its own finish time which is usually around 11pm) the adjudicator announces the results. To qualify for the overall prize i.e. the Champion of Tameside or Saddleworth, bands must compete at a minimum of 6 venues and the band that has the best results takes the overall prize.

This year Foden's competed at all 11 venues in Tameside starting at 4pm. Following the announcement of the results Foden's were crowned the 'Tameside Whit Friday Champions' for the 21st time in 22 years.

In Tameside Foden's were placed 1st at 8 venues as well as receiving a 3 ^rd place and numerous individual awards.

Foden's close the 'Elgar International Festival of Brass'

On Sunday 8 ^th June Foden's travelled to 'Malvern Theatre' where they performed as part of the 'Elgar International Festival of Brass.' This prestigious Festival also featured Cory and Black Dyke with all bands performing a work(s) from the pen of featured composer Edward Gregson (who is celebrating his 80 ^th birthday). A large and receptive audience enjoyed a day of 'serious' music with bands also featuring an extended solo / concerto

Foden's programme included 'Festival March, Chalk Farm No 2' and 'Essay' from the pen of Edward Gregson, 'The Children's Friend' by Wilfred Heaton (also recorded by Foden's in 2024) and a reprise of their 2026 European Own Choice test Piece 'Jesus in Tibet' by Simon Dobson.

For their 'Concerto' Foden's performed 'Concerto Grosso' by Etienne Caussaz featuring Gary Curtin (Euphonium) and Mark Landon (Marimba) - Due to Foden's not owning a 5 octave Marimba (needed for this performance), they were extremely grateful to Adams Brass who arranged for this piece of equipment to be shipped from Holland with the assistance of Southern Percussion. Foden's would like to publicly thank both Companies for their help (and time) in making this possible!

On Sunday 1 ^st June Foden's made a welcomed return to Burton Town Hall where they performed an entertaining programme to a large and appreciate audience. The band were also delighted to invite a member of their fantastic youth band to perform with Foden's. Youth Band Solo Horn player Isla Hawkins attended a number of rehearsals prior to the concert as well as performing in the concert

Masterclass for Young players: Wychavon Festival of Brass and Foden’s Band Collaboration

Young brass players from across the UK gathered in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, on Saturday May 24th to attend the first ‘masterclass’ training session staged as a collaboration between the Wychavon Festival of Brass (WFB) and members of the world famous Foden’s Band.

Supporting and helping to develop young brass players has long been one of the objectives of WFB in addition to staging its annual contest. Historically, WFB has held frequent training sessions of one sort or another in the past but, for various reasons, has not been able to do so for several years. Happily, 2025 has seen the reintroduction of a youth project, achieved by joining forces with Foden’s and the hope is that this collaboration will become an annual event.

The masterclass was held at Bromsgrove School, familiar to many brass players who may have attended summer schools there. Facilities are excellent and allowed the Foden’s team to rehearse in break-out groups before coming together to perform on stage in the prestigious Routh Hall for parents and siblings at the end of what had been a very busy day.

The Foden’s contingent was led by MD Michael Fowles and in attendance were Mark Wilkinson, Darren Lea, Jonathan Bates, Stewart Baglin and Mark Landon who each led a sectional on their chosen instrument. Playing members of the WFB joined in the sectional rehearsals and on the performance stage. Michael was clearly impressed by the concentration levels, behaviour and ability of these young players who were all sight reading some tricky pieces!

The concert programme consisted of three pieces and the band, most of whom had never met before Saturday, gave a stirring rendition of the march ‘Star Lake’. This was followed by an affecting and musically sound performance of the 2020 Fourth Section test piece ‘Neverland’ – quite an achievement in such a short space of time! The final item was a rattling performance a Foden’s special--- ‘Dynamite’, arranged for band ahead of the Foden’s 2024 South Korea tour.

It was clear that everyone had a fruitful and enjoyable time. Parents and children found the day entertaining and useful, Foden’s player and WFB committee members had a lot of fun. Chief organizer of the day and WFB committee member Iain Willis was delighted at the outcome. “Things could hardly have gone better’’ he said as he was packing away.

Chair of WFB, Val Trim is confident that this is a collaboration that will be fruitful in years to come. ‘The future of the brass band movement lies in the hands of our young players –and we must do all we can to support them.’

Mike agreed. ‘It’s great to be involved in projects such as this—and Foden’s were delighted to be there to encourage and enthuse our young players!’

Foden’s Youth Band Collaborates with Chetham’s School of Music in Inspiring Joint Event

On Sunday 27th April, members of Foden’s Youth Band joined forces with students from the brass and percussion departments at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester, for an inspiring morning of music-making and collaboration. Hosted in the superb surroundings of The Stoller Hall, the event brought together some of the region’s most talented young musicians for an immersive experience of rehearsals, sectional coaching, and performance.

Led by Foden’s Youth Band Musical Director Michael Fowles, the morning began with full band rehearsals, followed by sectional workshops led by distinguished tutors from Foden’s Band: Mark Wilkinson, Melanie Whyle, Andy Cattanach, Sam Iles, Ollie Webb, and Ashley Dixon.

The event culminated in a short performance for parents and guests in The Stoller Hall, celebrating the students’ achievements and musical growth. The programme featured Blenheim Flourishes by James Curnow, Not to be Forgotten by Pat Metheny (arr. Jacob Vilhelm Larsen), and Fearless by Andrew Wainwright.

This valuable opportunity was made possible through the generous invitation of Dr David Thornton, Joint Head of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion at Chetham’s. The collaboration showcased not only the dedication of the young musicians but also the vibrant musical opportunities available at Chetham’s.

Corn Exchange, Newbury

On Sunday 18th May Foden's travelled to Newbury to perform in the fantastic Corn Exchange as part of the prestigious 'Newbury Spring Festival.' The Festival has been running for over 40 years and this year featured a number of World renowned groups including the 'English Chamber Orchestra' and 'Royal Philharmonic Orchestra'

Foden's programme featured a number of original compositions for band including Edward Gregson's 'Variations of Laudate Dominum' (who this year celebrates his 80 ^th Birthday) as well as 'Little Suite for Brass' by Malcolm Arnold (featured on a recent cd recording by Foden's). The audience were also treated to 'Cassius : The rumble in the Jungle' written for Foden's appearance at 'Brass in Concert' last year. 'Cassius' showcases one of the greatest showpieces in sporting history - 'The Rumble in the Jungle', which took place in Zaire on 30th October 1974 between George Foreman and the ‘The Greatest’ - Muhammad Ali.

Foden's prepare for the European Championships

Preparations are well under way for Foden's as they look to represent England at the European Championships in May courtesy of their British Open victory in 2023.

Speaking ahead of the contest Mark Wilkinson commented 'We are once again looking forward to representing England and are enjoying rehearsing our own choice test piece as well as the set work 'Transitions in Energy' by Fredrick Schjelderu. This work is very demanding both musically and technically and will pose a stern test for all! We are grateful to Darren Lea (band member) who has been busy preparing our itinerary and logistics which has included cancelled flights and having to re book from an alternative airport! Ahead of the contest we will be holding an open rehearsal in Sandbach on the 6 ^th May and will publish details nearer the time.'

The concert, supported by the 'Entrust Music Service Staffordshire' will see Foden's, Foden's Youth and the combined choirs each perform individual items before joining forces for a massed finale.

Hosted by Tom Redmond, it will feature the UK premiere of Edward Gregson's new tenor horn concerto 'Three Gods' featuring Belgian virtuoso Tim de Maeseneer.

In mid 2024 Foden's were informed that due to a 'change of use' they would have to vacate their rehearsal premises at Bradwall Hall, Sandbach (home since August 2016) at the end of February 2025. Despite help from the local community, Sandbach Town Council and Cheshire East the band were unable to source premises that accommodated their needs. The bands plight was also aired on BBC radio!

Speaking about the search Mark Wilkinson commented 'Due to the band being based in the Sandbach area since 1902 it was paramount that premises in Sandbach were found. During our search we were grateful to numerous bands locally and outside the area who offered their rehearsal spaces. We were extremely grateful to Jef Sparkes and the Acceler8 Band in Crewe who had made arrangements to house Foden's from the start of March'

Prior to August 2016 Foden's rehearsed in Moston, Sandbach but due to a devastating bandroom fire moved to Bradwall Hall with the previous premises being restored and used as office buildings. However, at the start of the year the band were informed that the industrial site that originally housed the band had been sold and was now available to lease.

Mark continued 'We are delighted to secure our former home in Moston, in the actual building where we rehearsed prior to the fire. Due to the large amount of property stored at Bradwall Hall band members spent the day prior to the North West Area Contest moving equipment with the days after the contest being used to take down acoustic boarding and recording equipment. We are absolutely delighted to remain in Sandbach and return to our original premises which brought so much success between 1995 and 2016.'

On Sunday 22nd February Foden's competed at the 'North West Area' contest held at the Winter Gardens Blackpool.

The UK is split into various 'regions' and the top two placed bands at each regional contest is invited to represent their 'region' at the National Finals, held at the Royal Albert Hall London in October. The top three placed bands from the previous years 'National Finals' receive an automatic qualification, due to Foden's being runner up at this contest we had already received an invitation to the 2025 Finals.

End of an era at Bradwall Village Hall

On Saturday 22nd February Foden's held their final rehearsal at Bradwall Village Hall, Sandbach. The Hall has been home to the band since August 2016 where they have won numerous National, British Open & Brass in Concert titles which has secured their position as the 'World's Number 1 Brass Band'

Due to a 'change of use' the band were served notice a number of months ago and have used this time to source a new rehearsal facility to keep the band in Sandbach (which has been their home since 1902)

The band are delighted to have sourced new premises with further details to be released shortly

Foden's would like to thank Edward Barlow (Bradwall Bakehouse) for allowing the band usage of their premises for the past nine years

Foden's return from a musically rewarding 24th visit to Armagh

On the 31st January Foden's travelled to Armagh, Northern Ireland for a weekend of musical activities!

As in previous years the band worked with a number of soloists in a master class situation. Eager performers were given the opportunity to perform a solo, accompanied by the band, with the relevant Foden's principal player giving constructive spoken feedback as well as addressing the large audience consisting of parents, teachers and supporters. The afternoon session was concluded with a number of massed items, where the soloists, teachers and supporters joined ranks with Foden's.

In the evening Foden's performed an entertaining concert to a large and enthusiastic audience which featured their fine array of soloists as well as 'Cassius: The Rumble in the Jungle' from their 2024 Brass in Concert Set. The programme also included the World premier of ‘Lift High The Cross’ by Jonathan Bates, commissioned by the Armagh Brass Band Summer School to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church (where the concert was held).

All at Foden's thank Ivor Stevenson MBE and his hard working team for their hospitality on this 24th visit! Plans are already in replace for a return trip in 2026.

Foden's open the '2025 RNCM International Brass Band Festival'

On Friday 24th January Foden's once again opened the prestigious '2025 International Brass Band Festival'

A highlight of the 2025 festival was the celebration of Professor Edward Gregson’s 80th birthday. An award-winning English composer, Gregson has made a profound impact on the wind and brass repertoire. The festival took a journey through his works, from his earliest compositions to his latest piece, Three Gods: Concerto for tenor horn, premièred by Belgian virtuoso Tim De Maeseneer and Foden's.

The Festival also welcomed the Athena Brass Band (an all American Female Brass Band) as well as Foden's, Black Dyke, Tredegar, Brighouse and Rastrick, Cory, RNCM Band, RNCM Junior School Band and Macclesfield Youth.

Foden's continue their 'Lions' partnership

On Sunday 12 ^th January members of Foden's spent an enjoyable day working with the Academy and Youth Band at Lions Youth ahead of an appearance at the National Youth Brass Band Championships to be held in Hull on the 29 ^th March. Mark Wilkinson, Jonathan Bates, Mark Bousie, Paul Hughes, Shaun Farrington and Graham Procter took sectional rehearsals before Musical Director Ian Raisbeck (former member of Foden's) took full rehearsals on the Youth Band's set test piece 'Fanfares, Songs and Dances' from the pen of Philip Sparke as well as their own choice work.

Foden's have enjoyed a close working partnership with Lions for a number of years with John Barber conducting their 'Debut Band' and a number of Foden's players children playing across the organisations three bands (Debut, Training and Youth)

Foden's and Matt round off a fantastic year

On Sunday 15 ^th December Foden's teamed up with the fantastic Matt Ford to deliver another sold out 'Memories of Christmas' show at Congleton Town Hall. The band included a number of new arrangements from the pen of John Barber, which included the 'Brass Pack' backing vocals of members Robin Basu, Gary Curtin and Paul White. 'Player of the Year' award was voted by his fellow bandmates as percussionist Sam Iles! Throughout the last 12 months, Sam has showcased his multitude of skills with great aplomb; whether it be outstanding work on the competitive stages, taking the spotlight as one of the featured soloists at Brass in Concert - or providing 'purr-fect' cat impressions in his percussion feature 'Kitten on the Keys' in concerts!

Celebrating Christmas in Sandbach

On Sunday 8th December Foden's were back in action for their annual Christmas Concert at Sandbach School!

Before the event, the band welcomed over 40 friends to a VIP reception, the arriving audience were then treated to Carols from their Community band who also joined Foden's for a massed finale to the event!

The concert gave Foden's chance to recognise the outstanding contribution on and off the stage of some of their players, details to be announced shortly!!

Foden's commenced the first of their Christmas performances with a return visit to Tern Hill Hall, Market Drayton on Friday 6th December. The band enjoyed entertaining the appreciative crowd who had fought Storm Darragh to make the concert. Foden's performed an entertaining programme with a number of new arrangements from John Barber plus solos from Richard Poole, Mark Wilkinson, Melanie Whyle, Grace Jeffers, Ashley Dixon, Gary Curtin, John Barber and even Anthony Mann on the congas!!

Foden's search for a new home in 2025

Following the band's devastating bandroom fire in 2016 which destroyed vast amounts of instruments, irreplicable historical artefacts and sheet music, Foden's Band relocated to their current home of Bradwall Village Hall, rebuilding from the proverbial ashes and delivering multiple National British Open, Brass in Concert and North West Regional titles over the next 8 years.

Earlier this year the band received notice that the premises being used would be adapted for other uses. which leaves Foden's facing an uncertain period without a permanent home in Sandbach.

Sandbach has always been front and centre of the band's identity throughout their 100+ years of existence, so finding a suitable facility in the area is of paramount importance to the organisation.

Foden's Band are back this Christmas for a special screening of Raymond Briggs' classic - The Snowman.

We are delighted to present this unique opportunity to watch a family favourite, with the live score performed by the World's Number 1 Band

So Matsukawa teams up with Foden's

Following on from his recent victory at this year's Brass Band Conductors' Association's (BBCA’s) flagship Conducting Competition, So Matsukawa has gone on to claim his prize of a unique opportunity to rehearse and conduct a championship band.

Working with Foden's band and mentored by Russell Gray, So prepared the band for a concert at London’s Regent Hall in London on the eve of the National Brass Band Championships.

So, who hails from Japan gave this account of his experience:

“I have been waiting for this award winner’s concert since I received the award in June! I never thought I would be able to play music with the top band that I had only heard on CD, and in the UK. But it wasn't just the concert that was truly precious this time. The 10 days I spent with them were all gems. I shared every moment of Russell conducting Foden's until the National Championships.

I have really admired the sound of British brass bands since I played the tuba in junior high school. Among them, "Harrison's Dream" was one of my favourite pieces. This year, the piece is the test piece for the first time in 24 years! I felt, what a blessing! I have enjoyed "Harrison's Dream" many times in these 10 days! And with the sound of the super brass band, Foden's.

I conducted two pieces at the Regent Hall concert the day before the National Championships. The pieces were "The Roots of Heaven" by Malcolm Arnold arr. Neil E Richmond and "With Fire and Sword" by Peter Graham.

From the first rehearsal, Foden’s welcomed me like family and immediately picked up on my music. But those two songs were not the only ones that moved me. They performed hymns as a routine before rehearsals. I was moved, this is a British brass band! I was originally planning to play only one hymn before the rehearsal, but I was so moved that I added another one on the spot.”

Foden's 'runner up' at the National Finals

On Saturday 5th October Foden's competed at the 'National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain' held at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The contest featured the top 20 brass bands from around the UK who qualified from competing at various 'Area' contests across the country. Foden's won the 'North West Area' in February '24 for the eight consecutive year. Each band performed the set piece entitled 'Harrisons Dream' by Peter Graham.

Foden's were delighted to be placed 'runner up' against such strong opposition, making them the most consistent band in this contest over the past four years being placed runner up on two occasions and National Champions twice

Foden's announce Regent Hall details and additional guests!

Foden's are looking forward to hosting their annual 'National Championships preview evening' at the Regent Hall, London on the 4 ^th October. As well as including a sneak preview of Peter Graham's 'Harrison's Dream' they will also reprise their award winning Brass in Concert set 'Prince Ali' as well as performing music from their critically acclaimed Malcolm Arnold CD and other concert items.

Speaking about the concert Mark Wilkinson commented 'Performing at the Regent Hall is one of our yearly highlights and this year is no different! We are delighted to announce that the fantastic Jens Lindemann has accepted our invitation to perform and we also look forward to being joined by So Matsukawa who was the winner of the 2024 Brass Band Conductors Assocation Contest. Jens is a Vice President of Foden's being in demand as a soloist and educator (including appearances with the World's leading Orchestras, London Symphony, Berlin, Philadelphia, Moscow, St. Petersburg etc). So has just returned from a successful tour of Japan where he served as assistant Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. So will conduct a couple of items in the programme with the remaining pieces directed by Russell Gray. We are extremely grateful to Yamaha for their continued support.'

North Wales International Festival

On Saturday 14 ^th September Foden's performed to a capacity audience at the prestigious North Wales International Festival. The artistic director is Paul Mealor, President of Foden's who had arranged a stella line up of artists including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Foden's enjoyed performing a programme which included music from the pen of Dvorak, Elgar, Debussy, Heaton as well as works from Paul Mealor. The second half consisted of the bands BIC award winning set 'Princ Ali - from rags to riches' and Mussorgsky's 'Baba Yaga' and 'The Great Gate of Kiev'

Foden’s Youth Band 2024-2025 Season

Foden’s Band are delighted to announce that registration is now open for this year’s Foden’s Youth Band.

The Youth Band, now entering its 13 ^th season, welcomes players from across the region and from further afield to monthly rehearsals led by Foden’s team of experienced conductors and tutors. Players aged 21 or under, and grade 5 or above, are welcome to apply to the band.

The band meets 10 times per academic year in Sandbach, benefitting from unique opportunities thanks to access to Foden’s talented and experienced team of conductors, tutors, performers and composers.

Once again, we will be working in partnership with the Royal Northern College of Music who will be sending students to shadow Foden’s Band tutors as part of their studies. This partnership has proved highly inspirational for the young musicians in the band.

The band has an exciting season planned, which will include a collaborative project with the brass department at Chetham’s School of Music, a new commission from the band’s horn tutor Jonathan Bates, and an opportunity to perform on stage with Foden’s band in concert at the Victoria Hall, Hanley in June 2025.

'The Lost Circle' - Open rehearsals for the British Open Contest

'Trip of a lifetime' to Jeju, South Korea

After months of planning, Foden’s Band set off on ‘the trip of a lifetime’ as featured artists at the 2024 Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, this year held between the 7th - 16th August.

The annual festival, being staged for the 29th time on the beautiful South Korean island of Jeju, is one of the leading events of its type in the world. The festival has welcomed many globally renowned wind ensembles over its 29 years of existence. However, for a brass band to be invited to perform at the festival is a rarity. The Cory Band were the first to do so in 2022 and their successful appearance paved the way for another top British brass ensemble to light up the festival this year in the form of Foden’s. The advent of British style brass bands performing at the Jeju Festival has undoubtedly been greatly aided by the two most recent artistic directors of the event; firstly euphonium superstar, Steven Mead, and now the leading international trumpet soloist, Jens Lindemann.

The journey to the far east is, of course, a fairly lengthy one and after 24 hours of travelling, Foden’s Band members arrived at their hotel on the evening of August 7th.

After a day of acclimatising to the extreme South Korean heat and exploring Jeju city, the band’s first performance was at the opening concert of the Jeju Festival which took place in the stunning auditorium of the Jeju Arts Centre. Foden’s appeared alongside the Jeju Wind Orchestra, the Barcelona Clarinet Players and the Jeju Union Male Chorus in front of a terrifically enthusiastic audience of around 1000 people. The opening concert was also recorded by National TV to be transmitted at a later date . The extremely warm reception afforded to the band and its soloists wherever they performed became one of the standout highlights of the trip. At this opening event, Foden’s were also delighted to accompany the festival’s current artistic director (and one of Foden’s vice presidents), Jens Lindemann, in a performance of William Himes’ beautiful setting of ‘Amazing Grace.’

Subsequent concerts over the next 3 days were held at the Seogwipo Arts Centre (on the south coast of the island), the Jeju Culture & Arts Centre and the wonderful outdoor venue of the Jeju Seaside Concert Hall. Wherever they performed, Foden’s Band members were bowled over by the size and quality of the venues - quite something for an island roughly the size of the band’s home county of Cheshire!

Featured soloists during the band’s performances in Jeju were Richard Poole (soprano cornet), Mark Wilkinson (cornet), Melanie Whyle (flugelhorn), Jonathan Bates (tenor horn), John Barber (trombone) and Gary Curtin (euphonium).

Undoubtedly, Foden’s Band’s time in Jeju was musically enriching, but members made sure that they took full advantage of the free time available to them to explore the fascinatingly beautiful island - including beaches, caves, waterfalls and museums - and to experience South Korean culture and cuisine (not just fried chicken and Korean lager, although this was undoubtedly popular!). What an amazing destination South Korea and, in particular, Jeju is!

After a return journey, Foden's Band arrived back home in Sandbach late on August 13th with its members weary but thoroughly buoyed by the most thrilling of overseas trips. It’s to be hoped that this is not the first and only visit that the band makes to the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival and that this appearance helps to pave the way for more brass band performance opportunities in this part of the world.

Foden's head to South Korea

Foden's will shortly depart for a week of musical adventure from Heathrow on Tuesday 6th August, arriving in Jeju where they will perform as part of the renowned 'Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival.' Jeju is an island located at the southern tip of South Korea and is known as the "Island of Peace". The Festival started as a biennial event in 1995 and since then has expanded to become one of the World's most prestigious Festivals feature leading soloists and ensembles from across the Globe.

Speaking about the tour Andy Rolfe commented 'We are extremely grateful to the Jeju organising committee and our Vice President Jens Lindemann for their invitation to perform in this high-profile Festival. During our stay we will perform four concerts with the opening event held in the 1500-seater 'Jeju Arts Centre' and broadcast on South Korean Television. We look forward to performing varied programmes featuring our World class soloists as well as a reprise of our 2024 winning Brass in Concert Entertainment programme 'Prince Ali-From Rags to Riches'. King's Lynn Festival opens in spectacular style

On Sunday 14 ^th July Foden's finished their 23/24 season with a hugely enjoyable performance and a standing ovation from a large crowd to open the 2024 King's Lynn Festival in Norfolk.

The band had great fun with the audience in reprising their 'Adventures of Robin Hood' set from the 2022 Brass in Concert Championships as well as showcasing a number of the band's soloists.

Members now have a couple of weeks break before flying to South Korea!!

On the 13 ^th July Foden's commenced their final weekend of concerts, prior to a well-earned Summer break, with a capacity audience of 600 attending the annual 'Party in the Park' arranged by Sandbach Town Council. The enthusiastic crowd were treated to a varied programme ranging from Ralph Vaughan-Williams to The Killers! The concert closed with the customary 'Last Night of the Proms Set' with a spectacular firework display

Regent Hall - National Championships preview evening

Foden's are looking forward to hosting the pre-contest preview evening for the 2024 National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at London's Regent Hall on Friday 4th October at 7:45pm under the direction of Russell Gray

The programme will include a number of light concert works alongside the fantastic set work for this year's championships - 'Harrison's Dream' by Peter Graham!

On Sunday 23 ^rd June Foden's had the pleasure of heading south to Wotton-under-Edge to join forces with their friends at Wotton Silver Band for a day of masterclasses and performances!

The band enjoyed seeing so many friends in the audience - none more so than Euphonium legend Lyndon Baglin (pictured with Gary Curtin and Jim Fieldhouse)

The day started with a series of masterclasses delivered by Principal players from Foden's before they performed a varied programme in the afternoon to celebrate Wotton's 130th anniversary. The concert concluded with massed items where Foden's were joined by delegates of the various masterclasses earlier in the day

Foden's celebrate Jimmie's long service and 80th birthday!!!

To celebrate Jimmie Charles recent 80 ^th birthday as well as his 64 years loyal service with Foden's, the occasion was celebrated with a composition from Andy Scott.

Speaking about the composition Andy commented 'Jimmie has been a part of the Foden's family for sixty-four years, as player (cornet, horn and baritone) and librarian. In my time as Composer-in-Residence with Foden's Jimmie became a good friend and I offered to write a piece of music that was dedicated to him. Jimmie always quietly sings a tune, he draws you in to listening, he just loves music.

My musical approach when writing this piece was to try and capture the softly and lyrically sung element of Jimmie. At the same time Jimmie is so loyal to Foden’s, displaying the selflessness that makes him much loved in the brass band world. At his home we would make our way to the end of his garden to sit in the sun with a beer whilst he would go into the shed and put an old vinyl brass band recording on his record player and tell stories.

Jimmie’s close friend, the incomparable Mark Wilkinson, filmed a demonstration video of ‘Of Good & Pure Souls’ with pianist Wendy Nugent recently and then gave the World premiere of the brass band version of ‘Of Good & Pure Souls’ with Foden’s, conducted by Michael Fowles at Sandbach Town Hall on 19th May in the presence of Jimmie.

On Friday 21 ^st June Foden's joined their amazing Foden's Youth Band on stage for a memorable evening of music making! They sounded absolutely amazing!!

JOIN OUR YOUTH PROGRAMME!

If you are aged 21 or under and of a Grade 5 standard, the youth band meet once per month in Sandbach, Cheshire on a Sunday morning (9:45am-1:15pm) with concerts 3-4 times per year. Players are strongly encouraged to support their existing musical commitments elsewhere, and the schedule for Foden's Youth Band is aimed at assisting this.

Rehearsals are designed to stretch the young players offering them access to experienced high profiles tutors, exciting new repertoire and high quality direction.

Elgar International Festival of Brass 2024

On Sunday 16 ^th June Foden's opened the inaugural 'Elgar International Festival of Brass' in Bromsgrove with performances of Dvorak's 'Carnival Overture', Debussy's 'Masques', 'Ubi Caritas' from the pen of band president Paul Mealor and a reprise of the bands British Open winning 'Sand and Stars' by the festival's featured composer Thierry Deleruyelle

The unique concert format also featured a major solo work performed by Tenor Horn player Jonathan Bates who gave a "performance of considerable note" of Derek Bourgeois' incredibly demanding 'Concerto for Eb Horn and Brass Band'.

Foden's would like to congratulation and thank those involved in creating this new visionary festival - the packed hall speaks for itself!

Celebrating 80 years of the legendary Jimmie Charles!

Everyone associated with Foden's Band would like to wish band librarian, stalwart & legend Jimmie Charles the happiest of 80th birthdays!

OVER 60 YEARS ASSOCIATION WITH FODEN'S BAND

Jimmie was born into a musical family in 1944, his mother was as an accomplished pianist, in the early 1920s at an early age she was a pianist in the silent movies, flicks as they were called then, she had a wide musical career. His brother Cliff was a cornet player, his two sisters Pat and Joan were both singers.

At the age of twelve Jim went as a part time student to study under Bram Gay at the Birmingham School of Music whilst working his way through the cornet ranks with his local Band, reaching principal cornet at the age of fourteen. These were busy times has he was also playing trumpet in the school of music orchestra, wind band and the NYBB.

On one occasion Foden's Band came to Birmingham Town Hall, he then went (after his lesson) with Bram to the concert. The Bands sound had a lasting impression on Jim, in 1960 he wrote to Rex Mortimer on Bram's recommendation for an audition. He had his audition at Foden's Bandroom in the Autumn and was offered the position of 5th man down, later that day he had his first rehearsal with the Band, In mid December he left home boarded a train to Crewe, he was then picked up by Rex, given a Besson cornet and found lodgings with Mary Wood, home from home. It was Monday the 12th of December 1960, Jim had found his Band.

Foden's to share the stage with Foden's Youth

On the 21 ^st June Foden's will return to Stoke's magnificent Victoria Hall in Hanley for a special concert alongside their own Foden's Youth Band. Each band will present a set of music culminating in a massed finale with almost 100 brass and percussion players!

Speaking about the forthcoming event Mark Wilkinson commented 'We are looking forward to sharing the concert with our fantastic Youth Band as well as working in partnership with the Entrust Music Service Staffordshire. Foden's Youth will perform their own set including Shine as the Light, Glow and The Lake of the Moon with Foden's reprising their award winning 'Prince Ali - From Rags to Riches set.' The concert will conclude with massed items Prismatic Light, Swedish Hymn and Pines of Rome'

Foden's Band are the Tameside Whit Friday Champions!

From the first Whit Friday Marches in 1884, the event has grown in popularity.

On Friday 24th May over 100 brass bands participated in twenty different contests at venues scattered around the areas of Tameside and Saddleworth.

This year Foden's competed at all 10 venues in Tameside starting at 4pm and finished at 11pm as well as competing in 2 venues in the Saddleworth Area. Following the announcement of the results Foden's were crowned the 'Tameside Whit Friday Champions' for the 20th time in 21 years.

In Tameside Foden's were placed 1st at 8 venues and 2nd at 2 venues.

Following the bands concert in Stowe School, Buckingham on the 18 ^th May, a busy weekend came to a close with a special afternoon concert in Sandbach Town Hall, organised by the Mayor Ann Nevitt to whom we are incredibly grateful for selecting us as one of her chosen charities for her Electoral term

It was also a great reminder of the wonderful continued support we continue to receive from Sandbach Council and we look forward to supporting their annual Party in the Park event on Saturday 13th July!

Having a Blast with Towcester Studio Band

Over the past 6 months Foden's have enjoyed working alongside the Towcester Studio Band in a number of projects funded by Arts Council England entitled 'HaBiT (Having a Blast in Towcester). The funding has supported various workshops led by Foden's players, concerts in Northampton and Stowe, a visit to Towcester Band from Michael Fowles as well as a masterclass from Dr Roger Webster. TSB have also enjoyed working and taking live music into schools and the wider community.

The concluding project was held on the 18 ^th May in Stowe School where Michael Fowles worked alongside Mark Wilkinson and Gary Curtin delivering a workshop to local musicians before a concert featuring both TSB and Foden's

Foden’s Youth Band Presents Brass Band Pro-Rege Herenveen B -Orkest

On Sunday 28th April, Foden’s Youth Band enjoyed a visit from Brassband Pro Rege’s B-Band, from The Netherlands. The two bands took part in joint rehearsals with the team of Fodens’ tutors in the morning and gave a concert together at Sandbach School in the afternoon with over 100 musicians taking to the stage.

Brassband Pro Rege is based in Heerenveen in the North of The Netherlands. The band was formed in 1924, so celebrates its 100-year anniversary this year. The Brassband Pro-Rege organisation comprises an A-band and a B-band.

The A-band is an ambitious group of musicians and plays at a respected level of the first division in The Netherlands. The band is conducted by Anne van der Berg and attends the Dutch National Championships yearly, with several wins in the last few years. The B-band is an enthusiastic group of musicians in full development. Most of the 25 musicians are between the age of 9 and 16. The B-band is conducted by Hendry van Loo and developed last year from a starter ensemble to a full brass band of 5th division level.

Speaking about the event, Foden's Youth co ordinator Mel Whyle commented 'Foden's Youth had a fantastic time working and performing alongside members of the Pro Rege's B Band. We hope this is the start of a close friendship between both bands and thank Hendry van Loo and his team for arranging the visit.'

Foden’s Youth Band meet 10 times per year in Sandbach, Cheshire on a Sunday morning (9:45am-1:15pm) with concerts 2-3 times per year. The band is open to brass and percussion players aged 21 or under who have reached a minimum standard of Grade 5.

Foden's Band, Chetham's School of Music - The Music of Malcolm Arnold

The final track of a new CD fusing together Foden's with one of Britain's leading composers has been recorded with Sandbach man, Ken Talbot, secretary of the Malcolm Arnold Society, there to hear it.

Ken has helped fuse together Foden's Band with the music of the Oscar-winning composer's work for the "Malcolm Arnold - Music for Brass Band' cd. Foden's travelled to Manchester on the 27 ^th April to record the 'Song of Freedom' with the Choir of Chetham's School.

"The performance was exceptional and the choir very good indeed. Foden's gave their usual highly polished performance. The lyrics to the piece recorded which was "Song of Freedom" were written as poems by children on the subject of Freedom. They are, therefore, uplifting and optimistic." said Ken.

Following our return from Easter Holidays we enjoyed a weekend in Southern Ireland with concerts in Dublin and Kilkenny. Both concerts featured a reprise of our award-winning programme from Brass in Concert 'Prince Ali - From Rags to Riches' as well as the British Open Test Piece 'Sand and Stars.' The hospitality shown and audience reaction was fantastic!!!

Last weekend we were back in the heart of our hometown to entertain the huge crowds at Sandbach's annual Transport Festival as well as leading the parade. A baking hot afternoon performing arrangements from The Beatles, Elton John, Bryan Adams, The Carpenters and The Killers - nothing like variety!!!!

On the 16 ^th June Foden's will open the brand new Elgar International Festival of Brass at the Routh Hall in Bromsgrove with a stellar programme featuring music by the band's President Paul Mealor, a chance to hear Thierry Deleruyelle's magnificent 'Sand and Stars' - which was the set work when the band became the 'British Open Champions' in September 2023, as well as a rarely heard 'Concerto for Tenor Horn and Brass Band' by Derek Bourgeois!

Foden's set for iconic recording project

On the 16/17 ^th March, Foden's made a welcome return to the recording studio teaming up with the Malcolm Arnold Society to bring to life an entire album of his works - combining Brass Band classics such as 'Fantasy for Brass Band' and his 'Little Suites' with premiere recordings of a concert suite from 'Sweeney Todd' and his 'Overseas March (1959)'.

Next month, the band will be join the wonderful Chetham's School of Music Choir in Stoller Hall, Manchester to record his epic 'Song of Freedom'.

Foden’s Youth Band Presents Brass Band Pro-Rege Herenveen B -Orkest

Sunday 28th April 2024

In April, Foden’s Youth Band will welcome Brassband Pro Rege’s B-Band, from The Netherlands. The two bands will take part in joint rehearsals and will give a concert together at Sandbach School in the afternoon of Sunday 28th April at 2pm.

Brassband Pro Rege is based in Heerenveen in the North of The Netherlands. The band was formed in 1924, so celebrates its 100-year anniversary in 2024. The Brassband Pro-Rege organisation comprises an A-band and a B-band.

The two bands will feature in a concert on Sunday 28th April in the theatre at Sandbach School, Crewe Road CW11 3NS.

North West Area Champions

On Sunday 25 ^th February Foden's Band competed at the 'North West Area' contest held at the Winter Gardens Blackpool.

The UK is split into various 'regions' and the top two placed bands at each regional contest is invited to represent their 'region' at the National Finals, held at the Royal Albert Hall London in October. The top four placed bands from the previous years 'National Finals' receive an automatic qualification, due to Foden's being placed runner up at this contest we had already received an invitation to the 2024 Finals.

Foden's competed against 11 other bands performing the set test piece 'Variations on an Enigma' by Philip Sparke and were announced as the Champions for the eight consecutive year and also won the prize for the best Principal Cornet

The programme featured a sneak-preview of Philip Sparke's 'Variations on an Enigma' ahead of our North West Regional Brass Band Contest appearance later that week as well as solos from Principal Horn Jonathan Bates, Principal Euphonium Gary Curtin and Flugel Horn Melanie Whyle, plus our 'Prince Ali: From Rags to Riches' set!

Uni Brass Gala Concert

On the 17 ^th February we had the pleasure of performing the Gala Concert at Warwick University upon the completion of the 'Uni Brass' contest. The contest attracted 30 bands from across the Country consisting of 820 participants. The contest was split into two sections with our very own John Barber and Mark Landon adjudicating one of the sections and Mark Wilkinson leading a masterclass to brass players during the course of the day. The bands 'guest soloist' for the concert was the fantastic James Fountain, Principal Trumpet of the London Symphony Orchestra.

The Uni Brass committee ran a very successful composer contest, the winning entry was entitled ‘Calling’ by Naomi Hill (who also won our inaugural Female Composer Competition last year!). Foden's performed this work in the concert

Congratulations and thanks to all the organisers for once again running one of the most important events in the banding calendar - keeping the music playing for university students across the UK!

Foden's make a welcome return to Armagh

On the 2 ^nd February Foden's returned to Armagh for a weekend of musical activities. As well as a concert in the First Presbyterian Church, which saw Foden's perform their award winning 'Prince Ali - From Rags to Riches' set, the band worked with a large number of young performers in a master class situation. Young soloists were given the opportunity to perform a solo, accompanied by the band, with the relevant Foden's principal player giving constructive spoken feedback as well as addressing the large audience consisting of parents, teachers and supporters. The session was concluded with a number of massed items, where the soloists, teachers and supporters joined ranks with Foden's.

Plans are in place for the bands 24 ^th visit next year!

Foden's lead a workshop and concert in Northampton courtesy of Arts Council England

On Saturday 13 ^th January a tutor team from Foden's travelled to Northampton upon the invitation of the Towcester Studio Band. The event consisted of a series of workshops, massed rehearsal, performance and an opportunity to hear the entire Foden's Band in concert. Over 60 delegates from 16 bands enjoyed an afternoon of music making under the direction of Foden's Musical Director, Michael Fowles.

The project, made possible with funds provided by Arts Council England also saw the commissioning of a new work for the massed forces, called Two Shoes, written by Foden's Trombonist John Barber. It's two movements celebrate the rich history of Shoe Manufacture in Towcester, and particularly the link between Towcester and Roger Bannister's record breaking 4 minute mile in 1954.

The final part of the concert was given by Foden's who performed to a large and appreciative audience.

Foden's Youth look ahead to an exciting 2024

Later this month Foden’s Youth Band will hold their first rehearsal of 2024 ahead of a busy and exciting year that will include a visit from overseas band Pro-Rege B-Orkest in April, and a joint concert with Foden’s band in June.

Musical directors Mike Fowles and Mark Bousie, along with the team of tutors are looking forward to welcoming members of our youth band back to Sandbach after their Christmas break and look forward to several exciting performance opportunities in 2024.

The band will welcome the Pro-Rege Brass Band B-Orkest in April and will give a joint concert in the afternoon of Sunday 28 ^th April in Sandbach. In June, the young players will have the opportunity to play alongside Foden’s in a joint concert at the Victoria Hall, Hanley.

Once again, we will be working in partnership with the Royal Northern College of Music providing placements to students, giving them the opportunity to shadow the Foden’s tutors as part of their studies. This partnership has proved highly inspirational for the young musicians in the band.

The Youth Band is open to members aged 21 or under who have reached a minimum standard of Grade 5 on a brass or percussion instrument. The Band meet 10 times per year in Sandbach, Cheshire on a Sunday morning (9:45am-1:15pm) with concerts 2-3 times per year.

Players are strongly encouraged to support their existing musical commitments elsewhere, and the schedule for Foden’s Youth Band is aimed at assisting this. Rehearsals are designed to stretch the young players offering them access to experienced high-profile tutors, exciting new repertoire, and high-quality direction.

The force of HaBiT with Foden’s

Foden’s are looking forward to kicking off their 2024 by teaming up with Towcester Studio Band for the first of two event days on Saturday 13 ^th January 2024 as part of the community based ‘Having a Blast in Towcester (HaBiT)’ project.

The reigning British Open and Brass in Concert champions will be performing an evening concert at Northampton School for Boys, Northampton starting at 7pm after conducting an afternoon of workshops to over 60 delegates from the Northants area, a full day of New Year treats.

Foden’s Band Manager and Principal cornet Mark Wilkinson, said ‘we really enjoy being part of projects of this nature, they are incredibly fulfilling experiences for all involved. It has been some time since we have performed in the Northampton area and we are extremely pleased to be part of such a great initiative with Towcester Studio Band’.

A spokesman from Towcester Studio Band said ‘We can’t wait to see the world’s number one band perform in what promises to be a great day of music making’.

The workshop band and Foden’s will perform together in the concert when a specially commissioned piece by John Barber will have its world premiere.

Foden's congratulate their President Prof Paul Mealor on a 'Double New Year Honour'

Foden's have sent congratulations to their President Paul Mealor on a 'Double New Year Honour' which has seen him appointed a Lieutenant of the Royal Victoria Order (LVO) for his services to royal music. The LVO is a personal gift given by the King to people who have served him in a personal way, Paul is this first composer since Sir Arthur Bliss in 1969 to be recognised in this manner. On top of this, Prof Mealor has also been presented with a Coronation medal for his contributions to the service at Westminster Abbey

Speaking about the award Paul commented 'I am still on cloud Nine and thrilled beyond words to be made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victoria Order, it is incredibly special because it was a personal gift of His Majesty. I am also delighted to have been awarded The Coronation Medal for my contributions to the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla.'

Paul is also the Artistic Director of the North Wales International Music Festival and this year welcomes, amongst others, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the King Singers and Foden's to St Asaph Cathedral in September

Foden's are the Entertainment Champions!!!

On Saturday Foden's travelled to Gateshead to appear at the 'Brass in Concert Entertainment' contest held at the 'Glass House' (formerly the Sage).

The contest organisers invited nine of the best bands from the UK as well as the Norwegian Champions and a leading band from America to compete at what is recognised as the UK's leading Entertainment contest. Each band performed an 'entertaining' 25-minute programme to a capacity audience in excess of 1500 people as well as over 2000 on line viewers. Foden's performed a show entitled 'Prince Ali - From Rags to Riches' written especially for this contest by their Solo Horn player Jonny Bates. Following a excellent audience reaction the band were crowned the 2023 Champions, the first time they have won this particular contest since 2009

As well as winning overall, Foden's were the recipients of a number of individual awards as well as winning the 'Performance' element and the 'Entertainment' award. Online voters (and those in the hall) also voted for the 'Audience' prize, which the band also won!!!

This result now cements Foden's position as the World's Number 1 Band until at least September '24!

Foden's invited to perform at the 'Elgar International Festival of Brass'

The ‘Elgar International Festival Of Brass’ will hold its inaugural Festival on the 16th June 2024 at Routh Hall, Bromsgrove. This annual festival will feature three of the World’s leading Bands, Foden’s, Brighouse and Rastrick and Cory in 2024, who will each perform an exciting programme of contemporary and traditional repertoire as well as featuring a major solo work with the inimitable Frank Renton acting as host.

‘Routh Hall’ is situated at Bromsgrove School and offers a fantastic acoustic with ample parking on site as well as easy motorway access. This venue is the home of the extremely successful and popular ‘Elgar International Brass Band Summer School’ ( www.eibbss.org.uk )

Due to the success of its Summer School, the EIBBSS management team are now looking at additional ways to deliver high-quality experiences of brass band music-making, this Festival will be a welcome addition!

To coincide with the Festival launch the ‘EIFOB’ are delighted to offer its new website www.eifob.org.uk which gives further concert and ticket details, with confirmed programmes from each band to follow in due course

National Championships of Great Britain 2023

On Saturday 21st October Foden's competed at the 'National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain' held at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The contest featured the top 20 brass bands from around the UK who qualified from competing at various 'Area' contests across the country. Foden's won the 'North West Area' in February '23 for the seventh consecutive year. Each band performed the set piece entitled 'Of Men and Mountains' by Edward Gregson.

This year the band were hoping to make a historic hat trick of victories (on the back of previous wins in 2021 and 22) but despite given a fantastic performance, that found favour of many in the hall, were placed 2nd with Gary Curtin being awarded the 'best instrumentalist' award

'Having a Buzzing Time with Foden's'

Foden’s are pleased to announce that, with the help of National Lottery Community Fund, its new ‘Having a Buzzing time with Foden’s’ project is helping provide the over 50s of the local community engage, enjoy and learn new music making skills.

Foden’s engage in numerous community initiatives and since 2018 have been collaborating with various organisations throughout the community, including Age UK Cheshire, in projects that are specifically aimed to help the over 50’s overcome social isolation and loneliness by making brass music together. This project allows its members to meet on a weekly basis to socialise and be put through their paces by tutors from Foden’s..

Mark Wilkinson, Band Manager said, ‘The free sessions are open to anyone that wishes to join us irrespective of whether or not they have played a brass instrument before. Some of the members are completely new to playing an instrument and others are of varying experience. Each week they come together as one to enjoy each other’s company whilst learning and improving their musical skills. The enthusiasm throughout the members makes it so much fun to be part of. We are extremely thankful to the National Lottery Community Fund in supporting this initiative’.

Foden's announce their Pre Nationals Regent Hall Programme on 20th October

Ahead of their National Title defence, Foden's have released programme details for their Regent Hall appearance, as part of the 'Regent Hall Brass Arts Festival' on Friday 20 ^th October.

The concert will be conducted by Russell Gray and will also feature Matt Ryan. Matt was the 2023 winner of the 'Brass Band Conductors Association Conducting Competition.'

Fodens' programme will feature their 2022 BIC set 'Adventures of Robin Hood' as well as works by Willcocks, Glinka, Hazo and Charmichael. A feature of the programme will be Edward Gregson's 'band only' premiere of 'A Song from Bram' originally written for the RNCM 2023 but re scored especially for this concert. The piece pays homage to Bram, a close friend of Edward and former President of Foden's. Foden's will conclude the first half with the National Set Work 'Of Men and Mountains' by Edward Gregson

Sheona was on fantastic form performing a wide range of styles and genres, including a number of new arrangements and commissions especially for this disc. On Saturday 9 ^th September, Foden's travelled to the Symphony Hall, Birmingham to compete at the 169 ^th British Open Championships. The 'Open' is regarded as one of the leading Brass Band Contests in the World which attracts an extremely strong line up of bands including an overseas guest.

This year, 18 bands all performed the set work 'Sand and Stars' by Thierry Deleruyelle. This exceptionally difficult work placed demanding challenges on all band members lasting 20 minutes. Despite these challenges, the work proved a popular choice amongst those competing and the 1500 plus audience.

Following the announcement of the results Foden's were crowned the British Open Champions (our first at this Contest since 2012) and now receive an invitation to represent England at the European Championships in Norway 2025.

Foden's are also the Double National Champions, a title won at the Royal Albert Hall, London in 2018, 2021,2022. In October the band will be hoping for an historic Hattrick!

Foden’s Youth Band 2023-2024 Season

Foden’s Band are delighted to announce that registration is now open for this year’s Foden’s Youth Band.

The Youth Band, now entering their 12 ^th season, welcomes players from across the North West, Midlands, North Wales and Yorkshire to monthly rehearsals led by Foden’s team of experienced conductors and tutors. Players aged 21 or under, and grade 5 or above, are welcome to apply to the band.

The end of our last season saw us say farewell to the band’s founder and co-ordinator Ian Raisbeck, whom we would like to extend our sincere thanks to for over 10 years of dedication to the project.

The band is now co-ordinated by Foden’s Band flugel player, Melanie Whyle, who is keen to continue to fulfil the band’s aim to offer world class opportunities to young brass players and percussionists.

2023 BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS - OPEN REHEARSAL

Join the band and our Musical Director Russell Gray on Thursday 7th September as we preview this year's incredible set work; 'Sand and Stars' by French composer Thierry Deleruyelle ahead of the 2023 British Open Championships at Birmingham's Symphony Hall on Saturday 9th September.

Admission is entirely free and the event will take place in the Theatre at Sandbach School, with the rehearsal starting at 7:30pm.

Foden's facilitate teaching to hearing imparied and deaf children

Over the past 3 months Foden's have run a successful programme to deliver brass lessons to hearing impaired and deaf children in partnership with the Love Music Trust and the Warwick Music Group. The project, funded by Arts Council England, initially saw four members (who also work for the Love Music Trust) being upskilled by Sean Chandler (a deaf music educator and consultant) during an intensive training weekend. Twenty Four hearing impaired and deaf Children at units within Cheshire East were then given the opportunity to receive ten funded lessons using plastic instruments provided by Warwick (research has proven that hearing impaired and deaf Children can feel vibrations better in plastic instruments compared with brass instruments). Upon completion of the lessons, the pupils were then able to access discounted lessons through the Love Music Trust (using the same teachers)

Speaking on behalf of Foden's the project co ordinator Mark Wilkinson commented 'Due to having limited brass teaching experience for hearing impaired and deaf young people in Cheshire, we wanted to create a legacy to enable children, regardless of disability to access lessons. The completed project will now allow staff to increasing their teaching in this role to the benefit of countless children.'

On behalf of the Love Music Trust (LMT) Director John Barber commented ‘the innovation and desire of Fodens Band to inclusively expand and nurture the next generation of young brass players is well known and to be applauded. Working in partnership with the LMT, Warwick and supported by Arts Council England, the band has facilitated a wonderful programme allowing hearing impaired young people in Cheshire East to enjoy the world of Brass music, taught by tutors previously unskilled in this important area.'

New Wilfred Heaton Legacy Recording

Wilfred Heaton is admired throughout the brass band world for the quality of a small body of published work. There can be hardly a brass band enthusiast in the World who has not heard or played the march Praise. His only ‘test piece’ Contest Music remains a favourite of that genre. For over half his life he composed very little, but in his final years he returned to composition, repurposing early, unperformed pieces and occasionally writing brand new work. Among them are two substantial items he almost completed before he died in May 2000 - a light hearted hymn tune based suite, which he referred to as a waltz for band entitled Beulah Land, and a 30 minute magnum opus entitled Variations. Some ten years in the making, Variations is a semi-autobiographical work.

The 2021 and 2022 National Champions, Foden’s Band, and musical director Michael Fowles have recorded a selection of late Heaton, including an authorised short version of Variations, his ‘battle of the bands’ march Glory! Glory!, a set of mini variations from the 1940s entitled The Children’s Friend, based on Sullivan’s hymn In Memoriam, and a sequence arranged by Paul Hindmarsh from Heaton’s incidental music Pilgrim’s Song, discovered in 2012.

On the 15 ^th July Foden's travelled to the Isle of Man upon the invitation of Manx Concert Brass. Foden's have forged a strong friendship with the band over the past 15 years which has seen Principal members of Foden's appear as guest soloists as well as visits from the entire Foden's Band, the last being in 2017. Prior to Foden's arrival, Michael Fowles had been working with the Manx Youth Band as well as Manx Concert Brass who will be appearing at the National Finals in Cheltenham courtesy of qualification from the North West Area Contest in March. This year's concert commenced with massed items involving the three bands before Foden's rounded off the 1 ^st half and entire second half to a capacity Villa Marina audience, concluding with a standing ovation!!

Foden's announce the Winner of their Female Composition Initiative

On Tuesday 11 ^th July Foden's held the final of their 'Female Composition Initiative' launched on International Women's day to encourage Female composers aged 21 and under to write for Brass Band. The contest (supported by Arts Council England) saw submitted entries reduced to three by Dr Lucy Pankhurst and Dr Liz Lane before being performed in concert.

The shortlisted Composers Naomi Hill (What a Saviour!), Mary Lillington (The Battle) attended in person with Anna Conroy (Take the Cake) joining virtually. Both Lucy and Liz gave constructive feedback after each performance before announcing Naomi Hill as the winner. Naomi will now have her worked published by Foden's Publishing with each shortlisted composer being sent a video / audio of their performance, written feedback as well as a 1:1 session with Lucy and Liz.

Speaking about the project Lucy commented 'I am very grateful to Foden’s for organising this composition competition. Promoting brass bands as a vehicle for new music is always an exciting prospect in its own right, but to specifically shine the spotlight on young composers that might otherwise not have approached the ensemble was wonderful. With so much musical potential and fresh ideas in the music, the role that Liz and I were tasked with was most certainly not an easy one, but what a privilege to be part of the process. Hearing the band bring the music to life by these three talented composers for the first time was stunning - I hope it fuels their enthusiasm to continue writing more!

Liz commented 'I was delighted to be asked to be a part of this initiative, and privileged to have the opportunity to get to know some innovative and impressive new compositions for the brass band repertoire. The three finalists all had very different approaches but it was clear that everyone really enjoyed listening to their music; excitingly, two of the composers had written for brass band for the first time.’ Thanks to all involved for an excellent evening. Congratulations to the winner Naomi and to Mary and Anna, I really look forward to hearing more of their music in the future.'

'The Sun has got his hat on!

When we promised our audience an ‘electric show’ that will ‘blow you away’, we weren’t quite expecting the hour-long apocalyptic thunderstorm which delayed the start of our concert of Big Band classics with Matt Ford at Gawsworth Hall last weekend. A huge thanks to the large and appreciative audience that was able to stay for the show - we hope the sun and great music thawed you out in the end!

Female Composition competition finalists announced

On International Women’s day, Foden’s launched details of a major initiative (supported via Arts Council England) to provide opportunities for female composers aged 21 and under to write for brass band.

On the 11th July, Foden's will perform the above pieces with spoken feedback on each composition from panel members Lucy Pankhurst and Liz Lane. Prior to Lucy and Liz announcing the winner, the band will perform a short programme showcasing music from both Lucy and Liz.

The concert will be held at Sandbach School Theatre, Crewe Rd, CW11 3NS commencing at 8pm. Entrance is free

Foden's to perform at the Regent Hall, London on the 20th October

Ian Raisbeck signs off after an outstanding 10 years of service to the Foden's Youth Band

On Saturday 17th June, Foden’s Youth Band took part in the Love Music Trust 10-year Celebration Event alongside Lions Youth Brass, Macclesfield Youth Brass and Poynton Youth Brass bands.

The concert also marked the end of a ten-and-a-half-year tenure as Foden’s Youth Band project co-ordinator for Foden’s former cornet player Ian Raisbeck. Ian has worked tirelessly over the years since founding the band in 2012 to grow and develop both the organisation and the hundreds of young musicians within it.

Ian Raisbeck commented “Words cannot describe how proud I am to have worked on this project with the support of so many great people. It’s brilliant that the team at Foden’s Band supported the idea from the outset and that they will continue to offer such a great opportunity for so many young musicians every month for years to come.”

As the band enters its 12th year, the project co-ordinator role will be filled by Foden’s flugel horn player Melanie Whyle, who is keen to continue to fulfil the bands aim to offer world class opportunities for young brass and percussion players to learn from the experienced team of tutors and Musical Director of the Foden’s band.

Foden's are the Tameside Whit Friday Champions

From the first Whit Friday Marches in 1884, the event has grown in popularity.

On Friday 2nd June over 120 brass bands participated in twenty-one different contests at venues scattered around the areas of Tameside and Saddleworth.

At each venue bands march to a central location where they perform a contest march which is judged by an adjudicator. Foden's played the popular march 'The President' conducted by Michael Fowles. After this the band members get back on their coach, travel to the next village where they repeat the same procedure again! The contests are open to all-comers, so the local youth bands get to match their skills against the UK's top bands. For the players, the dash from contest to contest makes for an exhilarating (though exhausting) evening. Thousands of spectators travel to Saddleworth and Tameside to watch was it commonly called 'the greatest free show in the world'.

Each contest offers prizes for the best band, best youth band, best soloists etc. with each venue attracting between 50 - 70 bands. Each contest is organised by local volunteers with the running costs and prize money being raised by local donations, sponsorship and fund-raising events.

At the end of the night (each contest has its own finish time which is usually around 11pm) the adjudicator announces the results. To qualify for the overall prize i.e. the Champion of Tameside or Saddleworth, bands must compete at a minimum of 6 venues and the band that has the best results takes the overall prize.

This year Foden's competed at all 9 venues in Tameside starting at 4pm and finished at 11.45pm, as well as competing in 2 venues in the Saddleworth Area. Following the announcement of the results Foden's were crowned the 'Tameside Whit Friday Champions' for the 20th time in 21 years.

In Tameside Foden's were placed 1st at 7 venues as well as a 3rd place. In Saddleworth they were placed 1st and 4th.

Paul Mealor becomes Foden's President

Paul is one of the world’s most performed living composers who has won a BAFTA, Brit and Classic Brit Award for his work. He came to wider notice when his motet 'Ubi Caritas et Amor' was performed at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011. He later composed the song ‘Wherever You Are’ which became the 2011 Christmas number one and the fastest selling single in chart history. As well as writing concerti and chamber music, Paul has also composed two operas, four symphonies as well as output for Brass Band including a Euphonium Concerto. In January 2018, he was appointed as an Officer of the Venerable Order of St John (OStJ) by HM Queen Elizabeth II and in March 2023 was promoted to Commander (CStJ) by HM King Charles III. Paul has recently been commissioned to write for the funeral services for the late Queen Elizabeth II and for the 2023 Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, with his work 'Coronation Kyrie' to be sung by Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel.

Band Chairman John Barber commented 'We are delighted that Paul has accepted our invitation to become the President of Foden's Band. We have long admired Paul's work and are delighted that as a composer celebrated the World over, he will be working with us to help develop future musical opportunities, programmes and initiatives.’

Speaking about his appointment Paul commented ‘I am honoured and delighted to have been invited to become Foden's President. They are truly one of the greatest ensembles in the world and have a history routed in our cultural heritage. I look forward very much to working with the band in the months and years ahead.'

Foden's appoint Matt Shaw on 2nd Trombone

Foden's have announced the appointment of Matt Shaw on 2nd Trombone

Matt is a familiar face to banding in the North West, having conducted and played for a number of bands across the region over the last 20 years, most recently playing with Rainford and Wingates.

A graduate of the RNCM, Matt is currently on the Brass and Percussion Department staff at Chetham’s School of Music, as well as teaching brass at Scarisbrick Hall School in Ormskirk, and tutoring for Warrington Youth Orchestra.

Speaking about his appointment, Matt said ‘I’m really excited to be joining Foden’s, especially during such a successful period for the band. I’m looking forward to working under the direction of both Michael and Russell, and can’t wait to take to the stage with one of the best bands in the world.’

John Barber commented 'Following the departure of Nick Birch in October, we underwent a lengthy audition process to find the best fit for the band both as a player and person. We are delighted that Matt accepted our offer.'

Foden's work in partnership with the Love Music Trust in 'Sing Swing'

In March Foden's worked in partnership with the The Love Music Trust as well as singer Matthew Ford to offer young vocalists in Cheshire East the chance to develop their vocal and stage craft, before being invited to perform alongside the band.

The project, supported by Arts Council England, provided the opportunity for young singers aged 11-19 attending secondary schools in Cheshire East, to apply for a chance to receive an individual 20 minute masterclass session with Matt looking at the stylistic approach to Big Band / Swing singing on a selected song. Having received video's of 'audition' songs, 11 students were chosen to take part in the masterclass. Accompanied initially by piano, the vocalists worked their way through the specially arranged songs, looking at and exploring Matt's 6 key performance elements, before later that night rehearsing their songs with Foden's.

A week later on Tuesday 21st March, the Sing Swing vocalists were invited to perform their song on stage at Congleton Town Hall in a concert with Foden's Band, an event which also featured Matt Ford both as a singer and compere.

Director of the Love Music Trust John Barber said of the programme ' Sing Swing is a brilliant programme that provided such a wonderful opportunity to our young people here in Cheshire East. The development of all of the young singers, in their confidence, body language, musical phrasing and communication of the story in such a short space of time was fantastic, and a huge credit to Matt. The way he gets the message across, making the complex easy to understand and access is fantastic'.

Speaking on behalf of Foden's Mark Wilkinson commented 'It was fantastic to work with Matt once again in collaboration with the Love Music Trust. The development of the young singers after Matt's workshop was inspiring and all at Foden's enjoyed working alongside the talented performers.'

SANDBACH TOWN COUNCIL – KING CHARLES III CORONATION EVENTS PROGRAMME

Sandbach Town Council is proud to announce its programme of events for the King’s Coronation Weekend. Whilst not all the details are finalised, the main events are taking shape and we can now publish the overall programme, the venues and how to obtain tickets:

SATURDAY 6 MAY – SANDBACH RUGBY CLUB 3PM – 10PM FODEN’S BAND/ LIVE BAND S.
With Foden’s Band for the evening of the Coronation Day, along with the Wirral Pipe and Drum Band, and the Audley Male Voice Choir. The Finale for the Concert will be a Last Night of the Proms event with our own Sandbach Britannia performing Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem!

SUNDAY 7 MAY – SANDBACH RUGBY CLUB (TIME TO BE CONFIRMED)
TEA PARTY/CORONATION CONCERT;
We will be holding an afternoon tea party on the Rugby club pitch, with live stream of the Coronation Concert. Wrist band holders will be able to bring their own picnic. Symphony Catering are offering an afternoon tea for two people for £15.00, available by pre-order directly with the caterer. Other food and drink will be available to purchase on the day at the Rugby Club.

Entry to the two events for Sandbach Residents is strictly via wristbands only. These can be obtained (max 10 per group) from the Town Hall or Rugby Club – but once they have gone, they’re gone!

THURSDAY 4 – WEDNESDAY 10 MAY – TREASURE HUNT! Find the 40 pictures of Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses located within the Town’s shops, pubs, eateries and Market Hall! Pick up your treasure hunt forms in the Market Hall or participating venues. Prizes will be awarded to the residents who find and identify the most pictures.

From 17 April, the town centre is going to be decorated with bunting and every primary school in the area has been given flags for each child to decorate – these will all be displayed across the Cobbles for the Coronation Weekend.

The Council has also awarded a number of small grants to help local groups and organisations to host their own events – details of these activities will be published by the organisers in due course.

On Sunday, 7 ^th May at 11am there will be a special Service of Thanksgiving held on the Cobbles.

We understand that some residents would have preferred an event in the Town Centre and, of course, the Council explored this as well as many other venues and sites. Unfortunately, these options proved expensive, unavailable or very limited on numbers for a major free event to be enjoyed by as many residents as possible. The Rugby Club has provided the pitch venue to the Council free of charge and we are able to have up to 1,500 attendees, with ample accessible car parking, facilities for performers, a bar and catering.

We hope many residents will obtain entry wristbands for these special events and support Sandbach Town Council in celebrating the Coronation of Charles III within our Community.

Arts Award Explore success!

Due to a successful application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund , funding was secured to identify 23 young people to work towards an 'Arts Award Explore.' The award is a recognised qualification through Trinity College London .

Following moderation, we are delighted that all the young people were successful with the moderator commenting that the 'evidence was well presented and very detailed' as well as 'demonstrating knowledge, understanding, creativity and communication.'

Thanks to all those who took part (as well as their parents / guardians!) The National Lottery Heritage Fund and David Hirst who acted as our advisor working closely with the youngsters over the past 6 months.

Foden’s launch Female composition initiative

Speaking about the initiative Mark Wilkinson commented ‘Foden’s are keen to open out opportunities for female composers under the age of 21 to write for brass band.

(Composers will be asked to submit a 4 - 6 minute composition in any style prior to the 20th June. The concert will take place on the 11th July in Sandbach where the shortlisted composers will be invited to attend)

Foden's are the North West Area Champions for a record 7th consecutive year!

On Sunday 26th February Foden's competed at the 'North West Area' contest held at the Winter Gardens Blackpool. The UK is split into various 'regions' and the top two placed bands at each regional contest is invited to represent their 'region' at the National Finals, held at the Royal Albert Hall London in October. Foden's are the current National Champions of Great Britain (a title they also won in 2021) and due to this received an automatic 'bye' to the October contest

Foden's competed against 11 other bands performing the set test piece 'Red Priest' by Philip Wilby. Philip describes the music as ‘A Concerto after Vivaldi with special separations, with the title referring to Antonio Vivaldi, colloquially referred to as the ‘Red Priest’ thanks to his youthful ordination and his flaming red hair. The piece contains quotations from, amongst others, ‘The Four Seasons’, and his well known ‘Gloria’.'

The adjudicators announced Foden's as 'clear winners' and also awarded them the best Bass Section and Principal Cornet.

Foden's entertain their Patrons

Heritage Project marked as a 'Case Study' by Heritage Lottery

Following the completion of our various Heritage projects, we have been informed that the overall 'project' has been marked by the Heritage Lottery as a 'case study for archival and online success, due to the quality of work and updated website.'

The successful application was submitted by Carole Crompton (Vice President of the Band) who worked closely with our management team in collating the relevant information needed for the submission.

We would like to thank Carole, and 'Devmac' who were instrumental in building the site as well as assisting with the project. Speaking on behalf of Devmac Paul McDonald commented “We have been delighted to work with Foden’s on their historical archive website. Delivering a technical system such as this needs a clear brief to ensure that the end product meets the original requirement, and this is exactly what we were provided with. We have a close working relationship with the band who helped us deliver a website of huge historical value and are proud that our combined efforts have been acknowledged.”

We are extremely passionate about preserving and celebrating our fantastic history and grateful to the Heritage Lottery for this accolade. It is hoped that this will help raise the profile of brass bands within the funded community as well as encouraging organisations to look into funding applications.

Foden's Heritage Centre

Over the past 12 months we have been busy indexing and collating thousands of artefacts to display as part of our new 'Heritage Centre' based within the band's rehearsal facilities (thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery).

Contained within the archives are programmes, photos, inventories, instruments, uniforms and other items of interest from the bands formation in 1902 upto 2023. A large number of these are QR coded with descriptions via our heritage website www.fodensbandheritage.co.uk

We are extremely proud of our history and hope people will enjoy visiting the centre in person (and online).

Foden's support young singing talent within Cheshire East

In December '22 the Love Music Trust (in partnership with Foden's) launched a project entitled 'Sing Swing' to give twelve young singers (within Cheshire East) the opportunity to participate in a masterclass with Matt Ford (one of the Countries leading Big Band singers).

On the 21st March, Foden's will accompany six male and six female singers in a concert fronted by Matt Ford at Congleton Town Hall.

Foden's are the latest ensemble to be added to the ConductIT online resource about the art and craft of conducting

Funded with €436,000 of Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership, the project was developed by RNCM Head of Conducting, Professor Mark Heron, in conjunction with colleagues at the University of Stavanger (Norway), the University of Aveiro (Portugal), and the Open University (UK). Described by Music Teacher magazine as ‘a marvellous addition to the conducting pedagogy that manages to successfully provide meaningful takeaways for educators and budding conductors with a wide array of existing ability’, the resource is being used all over the world, both by individuals and within a wide variety of educational institutions.

New content has recently been added to the Rehearsal Studio area of the site, which contains a series of films documenting the process of rehearsing and performing repertoire in different genres. Foden’s and Russell Gray are featured preparing for the 2022 European Brass Band Championships held at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and the renowned RNCM Wind Orchestra rehearse and perform Frank Ticheli’s Symphony No 2 in the RNCM Concert Hall. Coming soon will be a documentary of Sir Mark Elder rehearsing with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra.

Mark said: ‘We’ve been absolutely delighted with the response to ConductIT. The hardest thing has been convincing people that it doesn’t cost anything – I can confirm it is absolutely free for individuals and institutions to use! Due to the pandemic, we were unable to produce all of the case studies on time, so it’s great to add these documentaries focusing on brass band and wind band to the site. We are very grateful to Foden’s, one of the world’s top brass bands, for allowing us to film their preparations for the recent European Championships.’

Foden's members lead a workshop with the Westoe Band

On the weekend of the 7/8th January a team from Foden's travelled to the North East to lead a weekend of full and sectional rehearsals with members of the Westoe Band. The workshop was to assist preparations prior to the North of England Area where Westoe will perform 'Red Priest' by Philip Wilby.

Speaking about the weekend Michael Fowles commented 'We would like to thank Westoe for the hospitality and friendship shown during our recent visit. The band worked extremely hard during the intensive weekend of rehearsals and sectionals and I would personally like to thank their MD, Aidan Hodgson for his help in preparing the band to such a high standard prior to our visit.'

On behalf of Westoe, Band Manager Jo Wright commented 'Every member of the band has benefited from a weekend of the highest level of musicianship and the progress made across the two days puts us in a really good place to build towards the areas and beyond. The positivity and enthusiasm shown by Foden’s members has left all of us at Westoe fully motivated and inspired going in to 2023.’

Foden's welcome new Bass signing

We are delighted to announce the signing of Paul Hughes following the departure of Iain McKnight after the British Open due to work relocation. Our thanks go to Steve March who provided cover upto December.

Paul returns to Foden's after a few years break from banding. He grew up in Birmingham, learning his trade with Sovereign and Staffordshire before moving to Manchester to study at the RNCM with James Gourlay - during this time he played with top bands across Yorkshire and the North West, including joining Fodens in 2005.

Since then, he’s mainly focused on the Orchestral and Chamber side of Tuba playing with ensembles like Stockport and Wilmslow Symphony Orchestra, Corus Brass and the Staffordshire Tuba Quartet. He is part of the SLT for Entrust Music Service Staffordshire.

Foden's add to their foundation!

Foden's Band are delighted to take delivery of two new Yamaha Neo YBB632S Silver plate BBb basses from Rosehill Instruments. These basses replace previous Yamaha basses, which is the preferred instrument of Foden's BBb bass team Andy Cattanach and George Mitchell, and will continue to provide the solid foundation of the band.

Principal BBb bass Andy Cattanach mentions, ‘The consistency of the Yamaha Neo has made it the choice of many BBb bass players in recent years. The sound, response and tuning make supporting the best of brass bands an easier and more enjoyable task!’

On behalf of Rosehill Instruments Paul Austin commented, ‘Our Rosehill technicians enjoy working with Yamaha brass tubas: aside from the playing advantages and their reliable mechanical operation, they are designed to be easily dismantled to aid servicing. We are proud to supply a band with such a great reputation and are confident the Yamaha tubas will prove a good long-term investment.’

In 2021 we were successful in an application to the 'Heritage Lottery' to fund a number of projects to celebrate our illustrious history.

The first project was to record material where the composer / arranger had links to the band. These recordings were made using original manuscripts in the bands possession and have been up loaded to our Heritage site. The Heritage site also contains over 120 previously digitised 78's of the band from the turn of the Century

As part of a social history project we wanted to interview a number of ex and current members. This was a fascinating project to document what banding was like over 50 years ago as well as gaining an insight of playing under banding greats such as the Mortimers. It was also interesting to hear how players were taught, how they came to join Foden's as well as playing at venues such as Belle Vue. Added to this, we recorded a number of videos, including photos and narration which celebrates various milestones in our history as well as acknowledging the contribution of past members. To help the project out reach we worked with Sean Chandler who added subtiles and sign language to each video.

The funding also allowed us to sign up 23 young people for the 'Discover' arts award. These awards are nationally recognised from 'Trinity College' London allowing youngsters to work with a qualified tutor to gain a greater understanding of the arts and to use Foden's as their inspiration.

We worked alongside Sandbach Council to install a 'plinth' in Sandbach Town Centre to raise awareness of the band

Finally, we have set up a Museum area within our bandroom to display a large number of interesting artefacts, further information on this will be released shortly!!!!

As we approach 2023, 2022 has once again been a very successful and enjoyable year both on and off the contest platform.

North West Area Champions (for the 6th consecutive year)
Tameside Whit Champions (for the 19th year out of 20)

Nationals Champions for the 3rd time in 4 years
4th place at Brass in Concert

Away from the contest arena we have performed in 31 concerts, held 10 training days with our fantastic Youth Band, recorded 3 cd's and completed a number of funded Arts Council and Heritage Projects.

In 2023 we look forward to a busy concert / cd schedule, a number of overseas appearances as well as some exciting Arts Council projects!!!!

Foden's hand out their yearly awards and presentations

Prior to commencing their Christmas break, the Double National Champions Foden's held their annual Christmas Concert to a capacity audience in Sandbach. The concert gave the band an opportunity to thank their Vice Presidents, Trustees, Partners and Gold Patrons for their continued support during 2022 with a buffet and drinks reception before the band treated the audience to a mix of regular Christmas classics as well as a number of new arrangements from the pen of John Barber.

During the concert a presentation was made to Richard Poole to mark his 20 ^th anniversary with Foden's. 2022 has been extremely successful for Richard which saw him release his first solo cd as well as being awarded the Best Soprano at the British Open and BIC and Best Instrumentalist at the National Finals. 2022 also marked the 30 ^th anniversary of long serving Principal Cornet Mark Wilkinson who was sadly absent from the concert due to illness.

National and British Open Champions perform a massed concert

Foden's are crowned the 'National Champions of Great Britain'

On Saturday 15 ^th October Foden's competed at the 'National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain' held at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The contest featured the top 19 brass bands from around the UK who qualified from competing at various 'Area' contests across the country. Foden's won the 'North West Area' in February '22 for the sixth consecutive year. Each band performed the set piece entitled 'Hyperlink' by Peter Graham.

Foden's were drawn to play last in the contest under the direction of Conductor Russell Gray with their performance receiving a fantastic reaction and ovation from the audience. Despite the high quality of playing from all bands throughout the day Foden's were later announced as the winner's for the third time in four years (2018, 2020 there was no contest due to Covid, 2021,2022)

Foden's get a helping hand to assist in their National Title defence and Regent Hall appearance

In June '22 the 'Brass Band Conductors' Association' held the final of their annual International Conducting Competition in Eccles. After a rigorous short listing process the winner was announced as Swiss conductor Boris Oppliger. 30-year-old Boris has already accumulated extensive experience after gaining his Masters in Conducting & Instrumental Pedagogy from Bern University in 2020 and is the current Musical Director of the Swiss first division band Ensemble de Cuivres la Covatte Coeuve, Fanfare de Montsevelier ensemble and the mixed choir 'Val Terbi en coeuve'. As well as these appointments he also organises annual wind ensemble projects in the city of Bern and chairs the music commission of the Federation of Brass Bands of Ajoie. As part of his prize, Boris has travelled to Sandbach, to assist Russell Gray in preparation for our title defence at the Royal Albert Hall.

On the eve of the Nationals, we look forward to once again providing our annual Pre-National Gala Concert at the Regent Hall where the band will include a performance of 'Hyperlink' with composer Peter Graham giving a short introduction of his work. Boris will conduct a number of pieces at this concert, along with Russell.

Russell Gray commented ‘I am delighted to welcome Boris to assist me in the preparations for our finals' appearance this year. He has great musicality and I know having extra ears in the band room is always helpful. As President of the Brass Band Conductors' Association, I am also very proud of the fact that our annual competition is producing winners of such a high standard and attracting entrants from all around the globe. I want to thank Foden's Band for their support and providing this platform for Boris to show the brass band world just what a talent he is.'

Foden's to hold a public rehearsal on Thursday 13th October

On the 14 ^th October, Foden's travel to the Royal Albert Hall, London to defend their title as the 'National Champion Brass Band of Great Britain.' At this contest, 20 of the leading bands across Great Britian will each perform a test piece entitled 'Hyperlink' by Peter Graham. The piece was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (funded by Arts Council England and the Department for Education) for its 70th Anniversary Year. Since the anniversary coincided with other significant celebrations in 2022 (including the Royal Albert Hall/Ralph Vaughan Williams 150th and the Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II) it was requested that these also be recognised in some way.

Prior to travelling to London, Foden's will hold an open rehearsal in the Theatre at Sandbach School commencing at 7.30pm on Thursday 13 ^th October (admission is free) where they will rehearse and perform 'Hyperlink.'

Harry Mortimer Celebration Concert

On the 25th September we were privileged to organise a concert to celebrate the Life of Harry Mortimer (120 years since his birth and 30 years since his passing).

The concert featured a narrated overview of HM's life (and the Mortimer family) by Paul Hindmarsh with music associated with major points in his career. Audience members also viewed images of Harry, listened to recorded material as well as watching old video footage of Foden's.

Prior to Foden's performing, the capacity audience were treated to a short performance by the Foden's Youth Band. The concert was attended by a number of HM's extended family including daughter Margaret and son Martin.

Foden's Youth resumes after their summer break

On Sunday 26 ^th September our fantastic Youth Band met for the first time following their summer break.

54 young musicians came together to open the 11th year of Foden’s Youth Band, supported by Michael Fowles and Mark Bousie alongside tutors from Foden's.

After a 3 hour rehearsal the Youth Band performed to a capacity audience (alongside Foden's) in a very special celebration to Harry Mortimer concert (more to follow shortly on this).

Foden's support Cure Parkinson's

Prior to competing at the British Open Contest members of Foden’s performed a short concert in Sandbach to help raise funds for Cure Parkinson's.

The event also gave band members the opportunity to see a rare replica of the 'Puffing Billy' steam bus that the Foden’s Band used to travel to concerts and which has been meticulously refurbished by Alan Painter.

Speaking about the fundraising event Chris Oakes commented ‘We are extremely grateful to members of Foden’s Band who gave up their time to perform a short concert to our family and friends to celebrate our Grandad’s 88th Birthday.

The event helped us to raise vital funds for Cure Parkinson's. Over the years we’ve seen first hand the massive impact Parkinson’s can have and we are so proud of our grandad who has shown amazing bravery in battling the disease. To raise much needed funding for research into this progressive neurological disease both myself and my Sister Melissa are running the London Marathon on Sunday the 2 ^nd October.’

Foden's to celebrate the life of Harry Mortimer on the 25th September

2022 sees the 120 ^th year since the birth of Harry Mortimer and 30 years since his passing. To commemorate this Foden's will perform a 'Celebration concert.'

Speaking about the event Mark Wilkinson commented 'The Mortimer family were (and still are) the most famous name within the brass band community and made a significant impact on the history of Foden's. Harry Mortimer is probably the most 'well known' of the family, being a former Principal Cornet and Conductor as well as leading a 'dual' life balancing his work with Foden's as well as a busy Orchestral career. To commemorate this, Foden's will perform a narrated overview of HM's life (and the Mortimer family) with music associated with major points in his career. We will also view images of Harry, listen to recorded material as well as watching old video footage of Foden's. We are grateful to Paul Hindmarsh who will act as our narrator and also to Martin Mortimer who will attend the event'

The concert will also feature Foden's Youth Band and will be held on the 25 ^th September at Sandbach School, commencing at 2pm. Admittance is £10 payable on the door

Foden's continue their consistent contesting run

On Saturday 10 ^th September Foden's travelled to the Symphony Hall, Birmingham to compete at the British Open Contest against seventeen of the UK's leading bands as well as the Paris Brass Band. The contest is regarded as one of the World's leading brass band events (along with the National Finals) due to the quality of bands and all 2300 tickets were sold within two days. As well as ticket sales, this year saw the contest streamed across the World to a large audience.

The test piece that each band performed was composed by Edward Gregson and was entitled 'The World Rejoicing.' Despite being a 17 minute work, the music is extremely listenable and proved highly popular with the large audience.

Foden's received a fantastic response to their performance and the large majority of audience members and critics were predicting a top two position. Following the results the band were placed 2 ^nd with the Soprano player Richard Poole winning the award for the best Soprano.

The band now look forward to defending their National Title at the Royal Albert Hall in October

Foden’s set for new youth intake

Foden’s Band are delighted to announce that registration is now open for this year’s Foden’s Youth Band.

The Youth Band, now entering their 11 ^th season, welcomes players from across the North West, Midlands, North Wales and Yorkshire to monthly rehearsals led by Foden’s team of experienced conductors and tutors. Players aged 21 or under, and grade 5 or above, are welcome to apply to the band and previous members of FYB now study at the UKs leading conservatoires and hold seats in many of the top bands in the country.

The band meet 10 times per academic year in Sandbach, benefitting from unique opportunities thanks to access to Foden’s talented and experienced team of conductors, tutors, performers and composers.

Speaking about the band, it’s founder and co-ordinator Ian Raisbeck said “for over 10 years now it has been a joy to see so many young musicians flourish under the guidance of the team at Foden’s. The importance of inspiring the next generation will never be lost on us and I would urge all aspiring young musicians to come along”

Foden's to hold an 'Open' rehearsal ahead of their British Open appearance

Ahead of our forthcoming appearance at the British Open we are delighted to hold an 'Open' rehearsal in the Theatre at Sandbach School, Crewe Rd on Thursday 8th September.

Under the baton of Russell Gray the band will showcase 'The World Rejoicing’ by Edward Gregson.

Armagh Old Boys Summer School celebrates 20th Anniversary with help from Foden's tutors

The Armagh Old Boys Silver Band where delighted to see the return of their annual Brass Band Summer School between the 8th to the 13th of August 2022 in the City of Armagh High School under the guidance of Foden's Band tutors.

The summer school provides an opportunity for young and young at heart to come together to form two bands based on players ability; The Sterling Band conducted by Mark Bousie and The Sovereign Band conducted by Michael Fowles. Attendees ranged from age of eight to seventy-two and represented many bands across the province, all of whom participated eagerly throughout the course during morning warmups, sectional, full band rehearsals as well as a questions and answer session . Participants also had the opportunity to perform a solo accompanied by the Foden’s tutors. As part of the 20th year celebrations, the Summer school were delighted to commission two works ‘Across the Stars’ by Andrew Stevenson and ‘The Stars of Armagh’ by Iain McKnight.

Speaking on behalf of the Summer School, Ivor Stevenson commented 'It was great to return to an in person Summer school once again with our end of course concert concluding an enjoyable week of hard work and enthusiasm by all. A big thank you to our wonderful team of Foden’s Tutors; Mark Wilkinson, Mark Bousie, Richard Poole, Shaun Farrington, Gary Curtin, Jonathan Bates, Stewart Baglin, Michael Fowles and Anthony Mann as well as all the 60 plus participants. We look forward to welcoming the full Foden's Band back to Armagh on the 17 ^th September (which replaces our annual February date which was cancelled due to Covid) as well as running the Summer school once again in August '23.

The concert, conducted by Russell Gray, will include a performance of the National test piece ‘Hyperlink’ as well as an introduction to the work by Peter Graham.

Foden’s announce the passing of Bramwell Tovey

It is with deep sadness we have learned that Bramwell Tovey, Foden's Band Honorary Artistic Director and President has died.

As a lifelong fan of Foden's, the news that Bram was to conduct the band at the British Open in 2000 was more exciting to his mother Joan than that of his exploits with the New York Philharmonic, London Symphony or Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. The performance at Birmingham's Symphony Hall was to be the start of a relationship that would last over 20 years with Foden's, a relationship rich in musical endeavour, artistic integrity and perhaps above all, fun.

Throughout the relationship, the partnership enjoyed a wonderful range of contest and concert performances as well as recordings and trips, all experiences the band looked forward to and revelled in.

In 2009, Bram and Foden's recorded 'Maestro' where through Bram's vision, Foden's collaborated with New York Phil trombonist Joe Alessi and Violinist Mark Fewer (who recited famous lines of Shakespeare whilst re-enacting the publicity stunt of comic actor Will Kemp in 1600) in Bram's own composition 'Nine Daies Wonder' to produce a recording described by 4Barsrest as 'world class excellence'. Bram's willingness and desire to associate and integrate some of the world's finest musicians with the band was a gift that he both had and used willingly for the benefit and furtherment of Foden's, something for which we will all be eternally grateful.

On the contest stage, a number of performances left an indelible mark on the banding world, with test pieces 'Ceremony' (British Open 2000), 'Les Preludes' (British Open 2001) and 'Albion' (National Finals 2001) all receiving critical acclaim. Despite the rehearsals, the process of getting everyone to a place where they were comfortable with Bram's contest vision, on the day of the contest, without fail Bram would always say 'watch me and be prepared to turn on a dime. I might find something new or take it in a new direction depending on the moment'. As a brass band used to preparing a well understood and 'fixed' performance, this was both alien and frightening and yet in Bram's hands, you trusted. You watched, totally glued as to what might happen next and without fail, it was an ultimately wonderful, liberating and exhilarating experience.

It was on the concert platform though that possibly the most significant musical events took place, with the 22-year musical relationship affording a whole spectrum of musical experiences. One notable occasion was the performance of Bram's very own 'Requiem for a Charred Skull' at the RNCM Festival of Brass. The music, showcased with the benefit of the RNCM Chorus, highlighting the experiences of war in the former Yugoslavia was something that has stayed in the collective memories of band members involved ever since. Deeply moving, passionate and musically profound, his ability to not only score the horrors of war but bring them to life so vividly through the performance was breathtaking.

As someone so readily welcomed to lead the finest orchestras of the world, a visit from Bram was always something the band cherished. A man with a wonderful sense of humour and scorchingly dry wit, time in his company was something that everyone enjoyed whilst not always believing how fortunate we all were to have in Bram such a supporter, leader and friend.

There will rightly be lots written about Bram in the coming days and weeks, however one line that will stay with all of us at Foden’s was something he once said as a player arrived a few minutes late for a rehearsal.

‘I’m so sorry I’m late Bram, I had a problem with my car’

‘Don’t worry’ he said. ‘This isn’t life and death, it’s band. It’s far more important’.

Bram will be profoundly missed by all at Foden’s and all of our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Foden's to appear in concert with the Chester Male Voice Choir on the 16th July

The concert entitled "Male Voices and Brass" is the culmination of events to celebrate the choir's 80th anniversary being compered by the Choir's newly appointed President, popular local choir leader, musician and composer Matt Baker BEM.

The choir, formed in 1941 by Fred Warren as The Cestrian Male Voice Choir had originally planned to stage the concert in 2021 but sadly it had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

'Welcome to the Bandroom'

Foden’s Band are pleased to announce the release of ‘Welcome to the Bandroom’, a project funded through Arts Council England, designed to create a definitive guide to the brass band that can be used by educators around the world for free!

The project features a specially commissioned piece by Lucy Pankhurst, with narration from Tom Redmond. Lasting just under 17 minutes, the full work gives the viewer/listener a complete overview of the sections in a brass band and the different styles that bands can play in. There are also 2 shorter videos, a 3 minute quick guide to the instruments of a brass band featuring music from the full composition, and a play-along video that can be used in conjunction with downloadable parts. A student workbook and PowerPoint presentation offer teachers and students an opportunity to use the videos as educational resources, giving many flexible tasks and activities aimed at a wide variety of ages/abilities.

Speaking about the project, it’s creator and producer Ian Raisbeck said;

“I am delighted that Foden’s were able to work on this project, creating resources which I hope will be useful to teachers and their students around the world for many years to come. We are extremely grateful to Lucy Pankhurst and Tom Redmond for their work on this, as well as Arts Council England for funding this project. Foden's are the 'Tameside Whit' Champions

From the first Whit Friday Marches in 1884, the event has grown in popularity.

On Friday 10 ^th June over 100 brass bands participated in twenty different contests at venues scattered around the areas of Tameside and Saddleworth.

At each venue bands march to a central location where they perform a contest march which is judged by an adjudicator. Foden's played the popular march 'The President' conducted by Michael Fowles. After this the band members get back on their coach, travel to the next village where they repeat the same procedure again! The contests are open to all-comers, so the local youth bands get to match their skills against the UK's top bands. For the players, the dash from contest to contest makes for an exhilarating (though exhausting) evening. Thousands of spectators travel to Saddleworth and Tameside to watch was it commonly called 'the greatest free show in the world'.

Each contest offers prizes for the best band, best youth band, best soloists etc. with each venue attracting between 50 - 70 bands. Each contest is organised by local volunteers with the running costs and prize money being raised by local donations, sponsorship and fund-raising events.

This year Foden's competed at all 9 venues in Tameside starting at 4pm and finished at 11.45pm, as well as competing in 2 venues in the Saddleworth Area. Following the announcement of the results Foden's were crowned the 'Tameside Whit Friday Champions' for the 19 ^th time in 20 years.

In Tameside Foden's were placed 1st at 4 venues, 2 ^nd at 4 venues as well as a 3rd. In Saddleworth we were placed 1 ^st and 3 ^rd

Foden's Youth to celebrate their 10th anniversary

In November 2020, Foden’s were successful in an application to the Arts Council through ‘Grants for the Arts.’ The funding allows the band to host a very special concert to commemorate the 10 ^th anniversary of forming it’s very own youth band as well as a commission from the pen of Jonathan Bates.

Speaking about the Youth Band, their founder and co ordinator Ian Raisbeck commented ‘Over the past 10 years, hundreds of young musicians have come along to our monthly rehearsals and concerts, receiving guidance from the conductors and tutors from Foden’s Band as well as guest artists. Since formation, the band have strived to provide a regular opportunity for players to stretch themselves through challenging repertoire, performing existing material in a variety of genres as well as several new commissions. The anniversary concert in July will feature the world premiere of ‘Decade’ by Jonathon Bates, which will feature Foden’s Band, Foden’s Youth Band and Foden’s Junior Band on stage together. Thanks to partnerships with Love Music Trust and Royal Northern College of Music, FYB has been able to support players in their development, seeing many continue on to further musical study and many now performing at the highest levels around the country. 'Geneva Heritage Cornet' for sale

As part of our European 3rd place prize, the band won a 'Geneva Heritage Cornet' in Lacquer.

Due to having a full complement of cornets, we have decided to sell this fantastic instrument and allow someone to benefit, rather than it not being used!

Foden's represent England at the European Brass Band Championships

In 2018 Foden's were crowned the 'National Champions of Great Britain' at the Royal Albert Hall with part of this prize being an invitation to represent England at the European Brass Band Championships to be held in Palanga, Lithuania. Sadly, due to Covid, the contest was cancelled and the band received an invitation to the rearranged event to be held in Birmingham last weekend.

The contest featured 11 Champion bands of their respective Countries who competed over two days. On Day 1, each band played the same set work and on Day 2 a work of their own choice. The points over the two days were then added together to provide the total positions.

Since our return from Easter holidays, we have rehearsed for 10 consecutive nights to prepare for this prestigious contest. The preparations also included a concert with the European Youth Band in Macclesfield which consists of talented players from all members of the European Brass Band Association under the leadership of Florent Didier. The concert gave us an opportunity to perform both test pieces ahead of the contest.

Upon the conclusion of the contest, Foden's were announced in 3 ^rd place overall with only 2 points separating the top 3 bands. Despite not winning, we had a fantastic time competing against the very best in Europe.

The band are extremely proud of our achievement and look forward to our next contest in September which will see us competing ranked Number 2 in the World rankings.

On the 27th April Foden's will appear in concert with the European Youth Band prior to representing England at the European Brass Band Championships to be held on the 30th April and 1st May at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

The EYBB consists of talented players from all members of the European Brass Band Association and will meet for the first time on Saturday 23rd April under the leadership of Florent Didier. As well as sharing a concert with Foden’s they will also play a part in the opening ceremony of the 43rd European Brass Band Championships at Birmingham Town Hall as well as during the award ceremony of the contest on the 1st May.

Foden's are extremely pleased to announce that they have been successful in an application to the 'People's Postcode Trust' to purchase fixed recording and streaming equipment.

The application will allow the band to stream rehearsals and concerts from the bandroom as well as to record as a preparation aid for concerts and contests.

This is also fantastic news for the Junior and Youth Bands who will be able to access the equipment so that parents can watch rehearsals and performances from the comfort of their home.

Foden's receive Heritage Lottery Funding

Foden’s are pleased to announce that they have been successful in an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £26,400. The total project cost is £29,910 with the Heritage Lottery awarding an 88% grant to this project.

This latest award will see the Cheshire based Band record un-published works which will be uploaded to their heritage website www.fodensbandheritage.co.uk as well as a large number of new and innovative videos. To build on their community links a piece of Public Art, an interactive information board with QR codes, will be housed in Sandbach to attract and inform local interest to supporting the band’s heritage and culture. To increase awareness of the band and local history, 20 members of their Youth and Junior Bands will undertake the ‘Arts Awards Scheme’ working with a heritage artist resulting in the young people attaining a nationally recognised award. The main part of the project will see the bands archive housed in a central location where visitors will be able to view the artefacts in person as well as via a virtual tour. A new work will be commissioned to celebrate the opening of the ‘Museum’ as well as a launch concert to an invited audience.

Speaking about the project Mark Wilkinson commented ‘We would like to thank the ‘Heritage Lottery Fund’ for the award which comes on the back of a previous grant in 2016. The grant enables us to protect and share our history as well as working with our younger members and community to gain a greater understanding of the band. To increase the outreach of the project, we will be collaborating with a number of partners and this includes furthering the work of our recently awarded Arts Council England grant where we are working with a group of young people with hearing impairments to add sign language and subtitles to make the heritage accessible to all. The Trustees of the band are extremely grateful to Vice President Carole Crompton for her work in submitting this bid. The association with Carole has now resulted in six combined successful applications to both the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England over a five-year period.’

Foden's receive a funding boost

Foden’s Band are pleased to announce that they have been successful in obtaining £33,450 through Arts Council England’s National Lottery funded 'Covid 19' programme.

Arts Council England made £160 million of emergency funding available for those organisations and individuals who have suffered as a result of Covid 19 with only those who have been previous recipients of ACE funding eligible to apply. Covid 19 funding was set up to 'afford practitioners and organisations time to stabilise, to think, and to plan for the future.'

Speaking on behalf of Foden's Mark Wilkinson commented 'We are extremely grateful to ACE for accepting our application. Like all organisations Foden's have been seriously effected by Covid 19 and the funding allows us to look at ways to increase our online presence and interact with audiences in a new and innovative way. We are also able to purchase equipment and work with professionals to allow us to become a leader in this area. I would like to thank Carole Hirst for coordinating and submitting the bid on our behalf. Carole is a previous Solo Baritone player with the band and since becoming our Strategic Arts Funding Advisor in 2016 has been instrumental in securing funding from Arts Council England’s National Lottery funded 'Grants for the Arts programme 2016 - 2019' Heritage Lottery Funding through the “Our Heritage” Programme in December 2016 and 'Catalyst' funding in 2019.

The funding will see the band deliver a number of online events which will include a free 'Winter School,' a virtual concert and a large number of 'karaoke' arrangements for players of different abilities to be accompanied online by Foden's members! A number of anniversaries will be celebrated as well as a female composer competition. Band members will be up skilled to deliver workshops and lessons with hearing impaired youngsters and a number of commissions and valuable resources to benefit the wider banding community will be produced. To help introduce new audiences to banding, Foden's will work with artists from different genres with funding also being used to develop and market existing events by adopting a professional approach to management and audience development. Finally, the organisation will increase their Youth outreach work celebrating 10 years since the formation of the Foden's Youth Band with their Youth and Junior bands now boasting over 100 members.

Speaking about the funding award Mark Wilkinson commented, 'After an extremely challenging year for all this is fantastic news for Foden's and banding in general. The funding allows Foden's to deliver a wide range of exciting projects to benefit the banding community, minority groups and to support those less abled than ourselves. It also allows us to raise the profile of brass bands in general and to interact with new audiences whilst working with a number of our educational and instrument partners. We are extremely grateful to Arts Council England for supporting our application as well as our vision and artistic plans. I would also like to thank Carole Crompton (a former member of the band and now Vice President) for her expertise and guidance in submitting the funding application.'

The funding comes on the back of a busy year for the band (despite being in lock down) who have produced 16 virtual band recordings, 6 podcasts as well as a successful online Whit Friday event, Music Festival and Solo Contest with all the various video content being viewed over 750,000 times across the World.

Foden’s Band are pleased to announce that they have been successful in obtaining funding through Arts Council England’s National Lottery funded 'Catalyst' programme. The band have been awarded £17,819 towards a total project cost of £20,875.

The project is to enhance Strategic Organisational Development within the organisation. The project will make the organisation more stable and resilient with opportunities for Foden’s Band to engage in a Peer Development/Peer Mentoring Programme and offer these opportunities as part of its on-going organisational development. The project will see the band develop a network of local and regional partnerships as well as proactively seeking collaborative working links. Foden’s will also undertake a governance review and develop a Funding Strategic Plan 2018-2023.

The funding bid was led by Carole Hirst who also secured Foden’s Band funding through Arts Council England’s National Lottery funded 'Grants for the Arts programme' in May 2016 and Heritage Lottery Funding through the “Our Heritage” Programme in December 2016. Carole will project manage the Catalyst Funding Bid providing support and mentoring to Mark Wilkinson, Foden’s Band Manager on strategic organisational development.

The project will commence on 1st March 2018 and will run until 30 Nov 2019. Foden's are the only organisation connected to the brass band movement to be awarded this funding.

The Arts Council England Catalyst Small Grants Programme is a fund where grants from £10,000 to £30,000 could be applied for to build fundraising capacity and encourage more private giving to arts and culture resulting in improved financial resilience support. 117 grants have been awarded giving £2.8 million nationally to medium sized organisations.

Jane Beardsworth, Director North, Arts Council England said, “I’m delighted that Foden’s Band has been successful in its application to our Catalyst programme. We have supported a wide range of different types of organisations through Catalyst and this award will help Foden’s secure its future.”

Speaking about the Funding award Mark Wilkinson commented ‘Foden’s would like to thank Carole Hirst for helping collate and submit this successful application on the back of two previous funding awards. I am looking forward to working with the band committee and Carole Hirst on this high profile project developing various strategies. The funding will also be used to look into ways to increase our fundraising and sponsorship capabilities.’
