On the 20th November Foden's band performed the first half of the pre contest gala concert at the 'Sage', Gateshead under the baton of the world renowned musician John Wallace to a capacity audience. The programme featured a number of the bands popular concert pieces as well as John Wallace performing the 3rd movement of the 'Hummel Trumpet Concerto.'

On the 21st November the band appeared at the 'Brass in Concert Entertainment Contest' held at the Sage, again under the baton of John Wallace. The band featured a programme included new arrangements/compositions from Alan Fernie, Robin Dewhirst, Andy Scott and Gareth Westwood featuring Glyn Williams as the bands chosen soloists. Competing against Foden's were 10 of the 'best' bands in the country.

Foden's were extremely pleased to be placed 2nd on the 'Quality of Performance (ie Standard of Playing)' behind Grimethorpe but unfortunately the bands chosen programme did not find favour with the 'Entertainment Judges' which resulted in a 3rd place overall. Despite this the band were pleased with the overall result, especially the 'performance' marks.

Glyn Williams was also awarded the prize for 'Best Euphonium' at the contest

Unconfirmed calculations would move the band from 3rd to 2nd in the 'World Rankings'

1. Grimethorpe Colliery (Allan Withington) - 196/7 = 203
2. Fairey (Geneva) (Steve Sykes) - 192/10 = 202
3. Fodens, (John Wallace) - 194/5 = 199
4. Brighouse & Rastrick (Richard Evans) - 190/8 = 198
5. Leyland (Philip Harper) - 187/9 = 196
6. Tredegar (Ian Porthouse) - 184/11 = 195
7. Carlton Main Frickley (Philip McCann)- 179/6 = 185
8. Rothwell Temperance (David Roberts) - 182/2 = 184
9. Redbridge (Jeremy Wise) - 176/3 = 179
10. Reg Vardy (Ray Farr) - 174/1 = 175
11. Flowers (Garry Cutt) - 170/4 = 174

(The first set of marks are for 'Quality of Playing'. For the 2nd set of points the 'Entertainment' judges awarded 11 to the band placed first, 10 to the band placed second down to 1 for the band placed eleventh)

Congratulations to Grimethorpe Band

For any conductor and every audience, Foden’s Band is a musical Magic Carpet. It continually takes the listener to places that few other ensembles rarely even approach Howard Snell
